Recently, I undertook the great task of cleaning out my closet in order to freshen up my wardrobe and start forming a more cohesive style. If you’re like me, someone who’d consider themselves more curvy or soft than the norm, then you know how frustrating this process can be.
Even though on average, American women are around a size 14 to 16, many clothing stores still either don’t carry sizes bigger than an XL or have plus-size clothes that are ill-fitting and not at all stylish. I’ve struggled with finding clothes that would allow for me to express myself and feel cute, beautiful, sexy, confident, and comfortable in my own skin for years; though a long and ever-evolving process of learning to love myself and my body, I’ve come to accept that I can feel all of these things and still be a plus-sized femme.
In order to help anyone who feels this great disappointment or disdain toward shopping and the fashion industry, I decided to compile a list of clothing stores that offer plus-size clothing that is both chic and (relatively) inexpensive because we deserve to look and feel stylish, too.
This list is based on stores that I’ve had success with (or heard positive things about) and is also formatted to range from least-to-most expensive:
1. Forever 21+
I personally love Forever 21+, especially because their plus-size pieces are trendy and affordable—I wholeheartedly recommend checking out their sale section. As with most of the stores listed, they have more options on their website, but they do include sizing information about their models and a helpful sizing chart.
2. Charlotte Russe
Again, Charlotte Russe is another store that carries a wider size range. They, too, won’t break the bank, and they often sell cute clothing pieces that I’ve struggled to find elsewhere (skirts, overall shorts and dresses, etc.).
3. Target
I’ve shopped at Target ever since I was a kid, so needless to say, I love them, too. Several of their new brands—such as A New Day, Who What Wear, and Ava & Viv (my personal favorite)—include great basics and denim, as well as some more sophisticated jackets, blouses, and dresses. Target, as we all know, also does a great job of not breaking the bank, and their clearance section is chock-full of plus-size markdowns.
4. Old Navy
Dresses and tops, specifically those with floral patterns, are my favorite items to purchase from Old Navy. The two dresses I currently have are both adorable and comfortable, fitting me perfectly and keeping me cool during the hotter weather. The best part about Old Navy, in my opinion, is that they carry multiple different articles of clothing in the same patterns, so if you’re fond of a particular print, you can find it on tops, shorts, skirts, and dresses.
5. H&M plus
Now, I have beef with H&M because they don’t offer their plus-size clothes in-stores (at least not at the locations I’ve been to). I myself haven’t shopped from their plus-size line, but as with H&M’s ‘regular’ women’s line, their clothing is relatively inexpensive and carries great base-pieces to build outfits around.
6. ASOS Curve
ASOS Curve is another line that I haven’t purchased anything from, but I have perused their website. The two things that have been keeping me from shopping with them are their prices and the fact that they’re exclusively online. I’m a college student, so I don’t have the funds nor desire to buy from more expensive places. I also don’t do much online shopping, especially because I am plus-sized (which makes me wary since comfortable fit and overall look are important to and normally difficult for me to achieve).
7. Torrid
It pains me to have to list Torrid last because this store is exclusively for plus sizes. They carry everything from semi-formal dresses to intimates to even exercise clothes, and everything is both fashionable and flattering. They also sell hosiery that actually fits larger calves and thighs without constricting them. The only downside to Torrid is that they are a more expensive option (which does irritate me to no end because plus-size clothing shouldn’t be as astronomically pricey as it is), but their pieces are comfortable, durable, and well-made.
BONUS: Amazon
Amazon can be somewhat of a wild-card when it comes to clothing. However, I still think that it can be a valuable resource for those looking for cheap, attractive items (having Prime makes shopping with them hard to beat, too). My biggest piece of advice with this, however, is READ THE REVIEWS—look at what previous buyers say about fit, length, material, price, customer service, returns, and more—and DO YOUR RESEARCH before making any purchases.
