The winter season is known for its comfy sweaters and the buzz of the holiday season. I recently fell in love with winter all over again since experiencing my first snow fall in Vermont. As soon as I saw the white flakes coming down from the sky I threw on my boots and snuggled into my winter coat. I plugged in some music and headed out on a walk with no particular direction in mind. During my walk I found some songs that put me into the wintery mindset.
Hello My Old Heart by The Oh Hellos
With an airy beat this tune seems lighthearted and cheery. However, upon further listen the lyrics lay out a story that is relatable to anyone who has had their heart broken before. Winter often brings nostalgia in with the snow and thus makes it a perfect time to reflect on those in your life and how they have affected you in the present. The Oh Hellos lay out this reflective tune without becoming mopey which makes it perfect for solo walks in the glittering snow.
California by Robert Ellis
Continuing the reflective theme, California by Robert Ellis describes the process of moving on. The mellow melody underlying the lyrics make this some easy to listen to, making this some a study session jam. The vocals are just repetitive enough that singing along will not distract from whatever your task may be.
Wake Up (Acoustic) by Fractures
The vocals to Wake Up call up a brooding mood that fits within winter perfectly. Curl up in a blanket with as many pillows as possible and breathe with this song. I recommend twinkle lights and a cup of hot chocolate to perfect the mood for this song. Due to the acoustic style of the song it is easy to fall into the cozy comforts of winter.
The Sea and The Rhythm by Iron & Wine
The barely audible vocals are sweetly sung like a lullaby in this classic Iron & Wine song. While providing comfort, this song also provides the melancholy vibe that is often present through winter.
In Dreams by Ben Howard
Ben Howard has always been on my winter playlists and this song is no different. While a little darker in tune than the other songs mentioned, it continues the broody vocals and driving guitar. To be honest, I would recommend any Ben Howard song. It would not be a bad idea to put a Ben Howard song between every other song on the list. It may be a little overkill, but only by a little.
Blue Blood by Laurel
Continuing the somber tones, Blue Blood by Laurel features a gloomy and strong female vocal. In contrast to Hello My Old Heart, this song sounds sullen but the lyrics border of optimistic. While sultrily crooning about a new love, Laurel creates an anthem for the ominous sirens of winter.
Misguided Ghosts by Paramore
To finish off the list on a feel good note I thought I would add some throw back Paramore. The first time I heard Misguided Ghosts was my fourteenth birthday in November. I was obsessed with it until the following spring. Something about winter just really ignites my wanderlust.
