Why is it that every time I hear a Christmas song I feel as if I’ve heard it a million other times? Sure, the classic ones by Nat King Cole, or that Hawaiian one, or the Feliz Navidad are always good because they have some sort of sentimental value to my youth and hearing them.
But Mariah Carey, Michael Buble, and lately Pentatonix, don’t give me that same feeling and yet it is songs by these artists that seem to be pounded into us every year!
So I started to do some digging, a little snooping around on the interwebs to see if I could find some alternative Christmas music to enjoy and let me tell you, I found some gold.
Here are some classic Christmas songs sung by not-so-classic Christmas artists that deserve to be heard!
1. "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” by DMX.
DMX is really stepping outside of his normal world to bring us this classic. I’ve heard mixed reactions from everyone I’ve shown this to— but come on! It’s bound to be a classic one day.
2. “Last Christmas” by Jimmy Eat World.
Jimmy Eat World has been called a “one-hit-wonder” by some, which is fair because I can’t really think of another song by them except for "The Middle." But obviously those who say that have never heard the amazing Christmas song by them. Embrace it now.
3. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by My Chemical Romance.
MCR and their album "The Black Parade" will always hold a special place in my heart as I always revisit them when I'm feeling a bit emo. Now I can revisit them during Christmas too! Hell yeah.
4. “Xmas Time Of The Year” by Green Day.
Similar to MCR, Green Day is a forever-love band of mine. I don’t even care if their newer stuff can’t compare (in my opinion) to their older stuff.
5. "O Holy Night" by Flyleaf.
This made me want a whole Christmas album by Flyleaf. I was 100% surprised how amazing they sound singing this traditional holiday song.
6. "Carol of the Bells" by Lindsey Stirling.
I mean, this is Lindsey, who I already enjoy, playing my absolute favorite Christmas song. What’s not to like?
7. "The First Noel" by Josh Turner.
I had to throw Josh Turner in there… his voice is just so majestic. I want him on the foot of my bed singing me to sleep every night.
