The year of 2016 has certainly been one of a long list of celebrity deaths, and though the Grammys features a long list of deaths each year, 2016 seems to have seen a higher number of notable celebrities.
1. Gene Wilder
The news of Gene Wilder passing this August truly devastated me. Gene Wilder was one of my all-time favorite actors. I have seen Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory more times than I could even begin to count, and I could probably quote all of Young Frankenstein.
2. David Bowie
I still cry every time I listen to "Space Oddity." Any other Bowie song I'm fine, but as soon as the countdown commences and Major Tom lifts off, the tears start.
3. Prince
Prince's passing was certainly one of surprise, particularly being so young. Many know Prince for his pop-ier songs, but his songwriting and guitar playing abilities were so much deeper than songs like "1999" and "Raspberry Beret."
4. Glenn Frey
Truthfully, I was never much of an Eagles fan, but after Frey's passing, I started listening to the few songs I do like even more. In fact, Frey sang lead on a majority of those favorites, with the exception of "Hotel California."
5. Merle Haggard
When it came to the Highwaymen, I was always partial to Johnny Cash, but Haggard was certainly noteworthy in his own right. I learned more of Merle Haggard's life and story after his death, which made me regret not appreciating his music more during his life.
6. George Martin
When 50 percent of the Beatles have already passed, losing the fifth Beatle is a sad missing piece of the puzzle. Martin was a well-respected musician in his own right, in addition to a renowned record producer.
7. Alan Thicke
Of course, my childhood self loved Alan Thicke for the role of Dr. Jason Seaver on "Growing Pains," but my adult self will always love him most for playing himself in "How I Met Your Mother." The Canadian references, pummeling Neil Patrick Harris and of course the innuendoes made in the "Space Teens" were always good for a laugh.
8. George Michael
I'm pretty sure I was in the middle of listening to "Last Christmas" when I read the headline on this one. I was never SUPER into Wham! but George will always be the one who gave me hope that maybe next year I'll give my heart to someone special.
9. Carrie Fisher
When I read the update that Carrie Fisher was in stable condition, I thought 2016 was finally going to cut us a break in its final week, but no such luck. Of course, to many Carrie Fisher will be remembered as the iconic Princess Leia, but she was also a great advocate for mental health awareness and a well-known feminist. When asked why Princess Leia never had her own lightsaber, Carrie replied, “Even in space, there’s a double standard."
