Since the beginning of time, Black women have blessed the world with their musical talents. From Etta James, to Mary J. Blige, Black and Brown women have dominated the music business with their soulful voices and sultry lyrics for as long as the sun has shone in the sky. That said, as a continuation of my previous article on "Black Girl Magic" this article is a dedication to the African American women who have paved the way for current and future artists, both Black and non-Black. Check out this handful of well-known artists who have mastered the art of speaking the Black female’s experience in this country we call “home.”
Erykah Badu
Better known as Erykah Abi Wright, Ms.Badu is the definition of soul. Simply put, she never ceases to please the ears with a little truth, love, and some good vibrations. If you’re into artists such as Goapele, then Erykah Badu is right up your alley, as she speaks the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about what it means to be a Black woman.
Jill Scott
Actress, singer, and phenomenal woman, Jill Scott is what one calls “unapologetically Black.” Through her powerful and honest lyrics, Jill has an effortless ability to speak the collective mind of the Black woman; a task that is not at all easy. Regardless if you’re Black, White, Hispanic or what have you, everyone needs some Ms. Scott in their lives.
India Arie
India Arie is personally one of my favorite artists, hands down. Like her peers, Arie has a refreshingly uncanny way of speaking directly to those who need to hear her. With personal anthems such as “I Am Not My Hair,” “Promises” and “Video,” Arie has successfully taught Black women (especially young Black women) how to love themselves purely, wholly and unconditionally.
Lauryn Hill
If you don’t know who Layrun Hill is, then you’ve been living under a rock your whole life. Ms. Hill is arguably the most famous female rapper / singers of all time, a title that has only been contested against by Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliot. A former member of the band The Fugees, Lauryn Hill’s music has been recycled for years and never gets old. Needless to say, this woman is truly incredible.
Janelle Monae
The self-created queen of the Wondaland music production company, Janelle Monae is a newer artist who has quickly proven herself amongst her more experienced peers. With funky beats and otherworldly visuals that are a celebration of Blackness, Monae’s music is nothing short of amazing.
Beyoncé
Queen Bey... Are there two words more fitting for this incredible woman? Though her music has always been extremely popular, the recent dropping of Beyoncé's “Lemonade” album took the world by storm and made a irretractable statement that was important for the Black (and non-Black) community to hear. It’s clear that Beyoncé is a musical genius (duh, we all know that), but she’s taken musical protest rhetoric to a new level.
Alicia Keys
Finally, we come to the gorgeous human being, wife, beautiful soul and mother that is Alicia Keys. Similar to the previously mentioned artists, Alicia Keys has made her mark on the music industry through a social justice lens throughout her career. Her most recent statement was that of the importance of natural beauty, as Keys has decided to step into the public eye, post photos on Instagram and perform sans-makeup. Though most women dream of this, Keys has actually done it, becoming an outstanding role model along with musical goddess. Words cannot describe how much I love this woman and all that she stands for.
