Everyone's seen the Facebook posts and news reports about the latest thing right-wing conservatives don't believe in. Whether it's climate change, evolution, or vaccines; it's always something. Bill Nye the Science Guy is by no means the authority on all things true or untrue, but he has discussed several issues that are received with much division among the conservative and liberal groups. But these issues aren't issues at all, they are facts supported by concrete evidence. Refusing to accept these facts is nothing more than stubborn denial.
1) Global warming is not a myth.
It's getting warmer, ocean levels are rising due to melting ice caps, and the ozone layer is deteriorating, making the suns rays more harmful. These are facts, not government conspiracies meant to keep us in fear.
2) Humans are causing global warming.
Car exhaust, factory waste, and even our own breath is putting more and more carbon dioxide into the air. Not to mention that deforestation is reducing oxygen production and atmospheric carbon removal. These increasing levels of CO2 are causing the Earth's climate to change dramatically, and there's nothing real out there that supports a dissenting opinion.
3) Evolution is not a myth.
One of the most important and omnipresent concepts in biology is evolution. Fossil records are just one of the many pieces of concrete evidence that prove the theory of evolution, making it more than just a theory. It's happening all around us, every second of every day.
4) Creationism is a theory, making it closer to a myth than evolution, by a dictionary's standards.
It has no scientific evidence or reproducible experimental results to support it. Plain and simple.
5) The Earth has been around a lot longer than a few thousand years.
For some reason, anti-science Americans will not believe a shred of evidence supporting the Earth's true age. Radioactive carbon dating proves, without a shadow of a doubt, that the earth is 4.54 billion years old. There is no hard evidence of the Earth blinking into existence a couple thousand years ago.
6) Humans can't directly cause natural disasters.
A former Missouri Senate Candidate, Todd Akin, once blamed Bill Nye for causing Hurricane Isaac, citing the Biblical destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah for its people's sins. Apparently, we bring natural disasters upon ourselves through sin and deviant behavior.
7) Vaccines don't cause autism.
There is no scientific proof that vaccines are linked to Autism or any other kind of disability. But there is proof that vaccines not only prevent your child from catching disease, but they also protect other children from the spread of those diseases. Refusing to vaccinate your children puts more than just your children at risk. It puts everyone around them at risk.
