The 7 Best Things About Cold Weather

Fuzzy socks bring joy on the coldest of days.

The 7 Best Things About Cold Weather
University of Portland

I’ll start off by acknowledging the privilege I have of enjoying cold weather. After volunteering to serve those who are experiencing homelessness, I am more than aware of the blessings I have of a warm, dry place to sleep and adequate clothing to keep me warm when I am outside. That being said, winter is my favorite season, and living above the equator, with winter comes cold weather. Here are seven of the best things I think cold weather has to offer.

1. The weather itself.

I am a proud rain lover, but growing up in Southern California, I didn’t get to experience much rain. Rainy, cold, overcast weather is honestly one of the reasons I decided to go to school where I do. Here in Portland, I have had the pleasure of experiencing both the disappointment of freezing rain and the pleasure of my first snow day. Is there anything more magical than a snow day? I think not.

2. Being able to see your breath in the air.

I’m surprised people haven’t looked at me funny as I walk around campus, purposefully breathing out of my mouth so that I can see my breath in the air. I’m still as amazed by the sight as I was when I was a child. I sometimes even like to pretend I’m a dragon.

3. Cold weather apparel.

I look forward all year to the time it finally gets cold enough to wear sweaters, boots with socks, scarves, beanies, and warm headbands. But best of all, I look forward to wearing fuzzy socks. Fuzzy socks are like hugs for your feet, and they honestly feel like gifts delivered straight from heaven after a long day of walking through puddles and ice.

4. Cold weather provides an excuse to stay inside.

When it’s cold, you have a valid reason for staying inside and watching Netflix all day instead of going outside. Yet another reason to love the rain.

5. Blankets.

One of the greatest joys in life is snuggling under a warm blanket. The combination of an overcast sky and a warm blanket may make it close to impossible to get out of bed in the morning, but at least I can savor the hours spent sleeping in my blanket cocoon during the night.

6. Hot drinks.

I’ll drink tea whatever the weather, but cold weather makes tea and coffee taste even better than usual. And, hot drinks aid in keeping your hands warm!

7. Cuddles.

Once again, cuddles are appreciated whatever the weather, but let’s be real, cuddles aren’t as nice when you or the person you’re cuddling with is sweaty. Cold weather is the perfect excuse to cuddle your (consenting) loved ones — you need to stay close together for warmth!

As mentioned above, many people in our own cities do not have the luxury of enjoying cold weather and all the joy it brings. Every now and then, I remind myself of the blessings I take for granted almost every day and offer up a prayer of gratitude as well as a petition of care for those who are not as fortunate as I am. Volunteering is also humbling, making you feel at least a little bit helpful and will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
