When you're in your early twenties and you have lots of breaks from school like Spring Break, summer, or long weekends, one of the most popular ways to spend them is going to music festivals. You want to find the ones with not only the best line ups, but also the best venues and cities. Here is a list of festivals this year that aren't too far for a southern-area student, and would be realistic to consider when picking out a quick, affordable trip.
1. Pilgrimage Music Festival -- September 24-25
Located in Franklin, Tennessee, at the park at Harlinsdale, Pilgrimage's two-day festival has some big names included in their lineups. Though the lineup for this year has not been released yet, it will be soon. Have a look at last year's lineup to get an idea of who might be there in 2016.
2. Music Midtown -- September
Some huge names are always found in Music Midtown's lineups as it is in a great spot at Piedmont Park, Atlanta, Georgia, a growing city. The 2016 lineup and dates should come out soon. Above are last year's top performers.
3. New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival -- April 22-May 1
This week-long festival has some impressive names in
4. Hangout Fest -- May 20-22
Music on the beach. I really don't think it gets better than this. Gulf shores, Alabama isn't an unreasonable drive for most southernmost cities. If you ever get the chance to go to Hangout, don't hesitate. This year's lineup looks to be pretty good, as most do.
5. Beale Street Music Festival -- April 29-May 1
Located in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, BSMF is guaranteed to be a good time every year, with great lineups, great food, and Beale street right there
6. Bonnaroo -- June 9-12
During the hottest part of the year in the middle of small-town, Tennessee, you'll find one of the biggest fests of the mid-south. The lineups tend to be amazing and locals are proud to be home to it.
7. Forecastle -- July 15-17
Located in Louisville, Kentucky, Forecastle looks to generally have good names in their lineups. For 2016, the lineup is above.
There has been talk that Wakarusa, a music festival in Arkansas in June has gone silent in 2016, but it's good that there are plenty of others to attend. Happy festival season, and may water and AC be ever in your favor.
