7 Benefits Of Being Part Of Sigma Alpha Iota

Anytime that I wear my pin, or letters, I am reminded of the sanctity of music and the privilege I have been given to be part of something that makes such an extraordinary impact.

7 Benefits Of Being Part Of Sigma Alpha Iota

I never thought Greek life would be for me. I was a transfer student and my previous school didn't have any sororities or fraternities. I had never felt so welcomed and accepted at my new school until I was encouraged to go to the recruitment events for Sigma Alpha Iota. Sigma Alpha Alpha Iota is a professional music fraternity for women (Yes-- a fraternity, not a sorority).

Here is a list of 7 benefits I've gained from being a sister of SAI:

1. Better Time Management

I have always been an ambitious person and have always gotten through times when there was so much to do in so little time. However, being part of this sisterhood has helped me to become even better at managing my time and prioritizing. It's incredible how the positive atmosphere of sisterhood has been able to shape me into an even more strategic and organized individual.

2. Undying Support From Sisters

My sisters are always there to cheer me up-- whether it's just by taking my mind off of stress during meetings, or by reaching out to me while I'm having a crisis in my personal life. We are all busy, but we all try to take care of each other.

3. Opportunity To Serve The Community

I have always enjoyed helping people, but I found it difficult to find really effective ways to do so on my own. By being part of SAI, I have had to participate in service events, while spending time with my sisters and having a good time.

4. The Gain Of Professional Experience

As a Music Major with a Minor in Professional Writing, I am doing my best to take as many opportunities as possible to gain experience. While nurturing my musical abilities and serving the community through music, I have been fortunate enough to be elected into office as Recording Secretary, which I learned so much from this past semester. I am looking forward to another semester of holding this position, as well as, my second position as Corresponding Secretary.

5. The Honor Of Representing The Organization

Sigma Alpha Iota has been an organization made up of women serving music since 1903. The organization has a number of philanthropies that serve the community through music. Anytime that I wear my pin, or letters, I am reminded of the sanctity of music and the privilege I have been given to be part of something that makes such an extraordinary impact.

6. The Ability To Rise Above

As a "people pleaser" by nature, it was difficult for me to realize that I didn't have to be best friends with every member. However, at the end of the day, we all have mutual respect for each other because we share the bond of sisterhood.

7. Being Able To Share A Love Of Music

The awesome thing about SAI is that we all individually have our own relationships with music. We get to perform for one another and support one another by going to each other's performances. Whether we are having music rehearsal, doing a stairwell sing, or singing after a sister's recital-- being able to bond over a love of music through song is something I cherish immensely.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
