7 Things To Think About As August Approaches
The Christian Nerd

Even though this New England summer has already been so hot and humid, August is notoriously known for being especially hot and humid. Here are some things I am always wary of or keep in mind during the hottest days of the year!

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Always keep a water bottle with you. August is one of the hottest months of the year in many parts of the world (especially so in the Northeast and Southern regions of the United States), so it is important to keep those fluids up in the body to combat fatigue, keep cells working, and to make sure you feel good in the high temperatures. If drinking water is a little difficult for you, try eating more fruits to stay hydrated! Some great choices are watermelon and apples!

2. Keep an eye on the levels of humidity

Air quality is important! This goes hand in hand with being hydrated – always be sure to be cautious if you are feeling light-headed outdoors as a result of how heavy the air is. Normally, nothing can deter me from enjoying the days outside in the summer. But when the humidity is too unbearable for me to even just sit in the shade, I know that it is a bit unsafe for me to be outside.

3. Keep out of the sun for long periods of time if possible!

Though laying in the sun can be relaxing, it is a well-known fact that the sun is extremely harmful to the skin! Always be sure to wear sunscreen with at least 50 if participating in outdoor activities and keep it on hand. Sprays are good for quickly covering up, but can be a bit off-putting because of their tendency to be greasy. I opt for creams and store them in a cool place! Also, remember to use an after-sun lotion (something with aloe in it) to soothe the skin after being so hot for so long. Also, don’t forget to wear sunglasses and hats for some more protection from the sun!

4. Be careful of heat stroke!

Keep your loved ones wary of the sun and cautious of how much time they spend outdoors too (especially the elderly and feeble). We can all help each other keep cool and safe during those extremely hot days!

5. Back to school shopping/preparing!

Even though August signals a beginning to the close of summer vacation, it also means the start of a new school year and new responsibilities! I always make sure that I have all my school supplies ready in advance, as well as getting my medical clearance forms for school done (especially since I know I will have virtually NO time to handle these things once the semester begins!)

6. Keeping pets indoors for their own safety!

...Or at least in the shade. Make sure they’re not like my dog -- I don’t know why, but my dog likes to stay in the sun on the hot asphalt even when it’s really hot outside! (my own picture)

7. Ultimately, remember the heat will end soon.

Remember that autumn is just around the corner, and the cooler weather will be here soon enough. If you’re like me and don’t like the heat, don’t worry – the days for sweaters and warm clothing are near.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
