The transition from high school to college can be pretty overwhelming. As a student, you get an idea of what it's supposed to be like but in reality you have no idea. You hope what everyone said was true and that there aren't too many more unexpected surprises waiting for you. Oh but there are. College is all about handling a bunch of tough situations at once as well as the unexpected's of life. One way to handle all these different situations is to constantly keep track of your life through apps in your phone. And since we, as young people, are on our phones so much, we might as well do something productive with our lives. Here are 7 apps every college student needs to survive on any college campus.
1. Groupme
Groupme is by far the best app any college student could ever have. You can have certain groups for your classes, so in case you don't know what the homework is and you don't have any friends in that class, you can just ask in the group. At my school, we also have groups based on what dorm you live in or even what year you are. These groups are a great way for people to promote events, sell products, or even just complain about school. Groupme is fantastic for keeping students in the loop.
2. Square Cash
The perfect app for the burgeoning, millennial entrepreneur. Square cash is an app that lets you link your bank account to your phone and you can make transactions with people who also have the app. This app is great for when you don't have any cash on you but Rebecca on the 6th floor is selling slices of pizza for a dollar.
3. Uber
Like MadeinTYO said, Uber everywhere (skrr skrr). Uber is an easy, quick, and pretty inexpensive way to get around town. A super convenient travel app that calls a driver to you with the touch of a button, Uber makes it much easier to get to the party all the way on the other side of town.
4. Postmates
Sometimes, you'll be sitting in your room and you'll feel hungry for something and it isn't close. If only there was some sort of way for you to see what places were open, what they offered, and how much it would cost to have someone pick up that food for you. Well look no further because Postmates is exactly what you're looking for. Not only do they do all of the things above, but they offer a wide selection of different types restaurants and stores. They have food for no matter what mood you are in.
5. Your Bank
This in my opinion is really a given. In college, you will spend so much money, on books, food, or whatever you may need. You have to make sure you keep track of your funds so you can stock up on as much Ramen as possible to survive.
6. Twitter
Before I came to Howard, I thought Twitter was the stupidest thing ever. It seemed so unnecessary and I thought people could not possibly care to hear every single thought someone else had. But boy was I wrong. Twitter is so much more than just people sharing their emotions and thoughts. It also is a great source of information about things going on around campus or even around the world. It really helps keep students connected to more than just their social circle.
7. Tidal/Pandora
Whether it's while you're walking from your dorm to class, or during a late night study session, music will be crucial to get you through most situations. As someone who hates paying monthly for any service, I will say Tidal is a great investment because of the wide selection of music they offer. They even have exclusives, like the visual for Beyonce's Lemonade album. For those on the frugal side who don't want to pay for music, I recommend Pandora. With Pandora you get a personalized radio station just for you with songs you have personally liked. Not only do you hear songs that you already know you like, but you also get to hear songs you may have never heard before.
