Freshman Year Of College As Told By SpongeBob SquarePants

I am not an avid SpongeBob watcher at all, however my roommate is and she is always watching it and making jokes about it. So if you're reading this, just know that I do think the jokes are funny. Truthfully, I cannot stand the show, but I think most people will agree that the SpongeBob memes will never not be funny. Somehow, Bikini Bottom and college are oddly related. It is lucrative, enlightening, there are many types of people with even more opinions and various backgrounds and sometimes, like dear SpongeBob, all you can do it laugh or make a funny face.

1. Graduating from high school and realizing you get to get out of your hometown:

I was so ready to experience something new after high school that I spent the entire summer with that look on my face. College brings new experiences, and most people are so excited that's all they can talk about. I am one of those people who packed my bags about two weeks in advance of my actual leaving date, and I am not ashamed.

2. Meeting your roommate and realizing it is basically going to be a sleepover every night:

Once you get over the fear that they'll be a nightmare to live with, you'll have yourself a new best friend! I have three roommates that I love to death, and there is never a dull moment between us!

3. Studying for your first exam:

Most every freshman resolves to be better than they were in high school, and sometimes that means studying harder. Usually, the first exam hits you like a ton of bricks and you find yourself studying at strange hours and consuming a lot of caffeine.

4. When the first exam is just essay questions:

Depending on the class, you'll either have all multiple choice tests, which is a blessing, or all essay question tests. All the studying you did was most likely not the information that should be used to answer the short answer questions. It's OK, the first test is often the hardest, simply because you're unsure of the format. Don't worry, it will be better.

5. Contemplating your major over and over again:

You will most likely change your major at least once. I actually haven't changed mine, but I also have always known what I am good at and what I love to do. Some people just aren't meant to be doctors, lawyers, engineers or teachers. You have to find something that will make you entirely happy, no matter what anyone tells you. Yes, advice is good, but it is ultimately up to you to decide what kind of future you're spending tens of thousands of dollars for.

6. When you realize your freshman year flew by:

You'll be searching, somewhat primitively, for the last year of your life, because somehow amid the football games, studying, making new memories and meeting new people, freshman year will be in the books.

College is a magical place where you can control where you go in life. It is the first real step into adulthood, but don't forget to have a lot of fun and enjoy this wonderful bridge of time where you have limited responsibility and unlimited freedom.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
