6 Ways To Stay Fit

Being fit is always a choice - it can be something so simple like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or waking up a little early to go to the gym before you start your busy day. It's not always easy to find that time to be active, but that doesn't mean you can eliminate it completely from your life. Or, maybe you just don't enjoy going to the gym or jogging monotonously. And we all enjoy sweets and fatty foods. There's so many options of ways to stay fit and be healthy; I guarantee there is something for you!

1. Yoga

Yoga has proven to be a relaxing way to break a sweat. It relieves stress and enhances your flexibility and posture. Plus, you can either go to a class or do it at home! There's plenty of videos for all levels online that you can follow.

2. Meal Planning

There has been some new hype about meal planning, and how it can help you with controlling portion sizes. If you have a busy day, it's easy to grab fast food for lunch or dinner. Taking time on a Sunday (or whenever is convenient for you) can enable you to plan out snacks, lunches, and dinners ahead of time. Even pre-making a few parfaits or easy oats and storing them in the fridge leads to quick, on-the-go breakfasts. Plus, this reduces temptation when you don't want to take time to cook something - the prep is done for you!

3. Fitness Classes

Many gyms and facilities offer fitness classes that break up the monotonous routines people have created for themselves. These courses provide consistency (as they are usually at the same time every week), and can focus on any aspect like core, arms, fitness, or even full body. There is truly a class for everyone, and people with all kinds of experience, body types, and fitness level can have fun.

4. Start With Elimination

"You are what you eat" isn't a lie, but that doesn't mean you should all of a sudden start eating only celery all day. Start with eliminating foods you know are bad for you, and you know you can handle cutting out. For example, soda, fast food, chocolate, maybe your daily donut for breakfast. Just by eliminating these junk foods, you will automatically see a transformation in your mood and energy levels.

5. Join a Sports Team

I can't even describe to you this feeling. Being on a team is like joining a new family. Whether you make a varsity team, look for a club, or even try a new intramural sport, your friends (old and new) will become the people you're closest with. It's a way to stay fit while playing a sport you love, and making new friends. Need I say more?

6. Don't Do It Alone

Getting fit and staying healthy is so much easier with a friend. Staying on track with your exercise or nutrition goals is difficult, and having someone by your side to motivate you makes it enjoyable. You push each other and encourage them to keep going. It can be a family member, a partner, or friend!

There's no way for you to get fit in one day - it takes time and lots of effort. So don't expect visible results automatically. What you can look forward to is feeling better about your body, your health, and your life!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
