Sometimes it can feel like you have lost control of your life. Many things can make you feel this way, whether it be breaking off a relationship, being sick for a week, or having so many tests it's making your head spin. Here's 6 things you can do to try to put some control back in your hands.
1. Clean
Clean your car, your room, your house. Cleaning will not only make you feel better because everything will be organized and pretty, but it gives you a sense of relief and pride. I know cleaning can be boring, and some people hate it; but you have to admit, doesn't it always feel like you can breathe a little better when you're done? Blast some music and have a private dance party while you clean, it will be more fun that way.
2. Eat a healthy diet
Eating healthy foods can be a fantastic way to feel more in control. This feeling is increased if you're cooking the food. Eating healthy will allow you to feel like you're making a change that is good for you in the long run. Maybe grab some friends and have a friend dinner! Have everyone bring something healthy, eat delicious food, and hang out :)
3. Catch up on work you may have fallen behind on
This is particularly helpful if you have just been sick. Missing a week in college can feel like you just missed a month. Get everything in order as soon as you feel better. Email all your professors and reschedule tests you may have missed. Start working on assignments due, immediately. I'm not saying you have to finish all of these at once, because let's face it, you probably have a bunch, but having something started will make you feel way more in control of the situation.
4. Exercise
Working out tends to be my favorite thing to do when I feel I have lost control. Not only does exercise release chemicals that make you feel better, but working out means literally taking control of your body. 30 minutes of working out allows 30 minutes for you to concentrate on something completely different than what's going on in life. So, hit the gym, go for a walk, or buy a new yoga mat and get your glisten on.
5. Take a break
Allow yourself a day alone in your room. Take a break and do whatever makes you feel better. I like playing ukulele when I'm stressed, no rhyme or reason, it's just soothing. So, play an instrument, write a story, write a blog, watch some movies, or just lay in your bed and stare at the wall. Take some time to yourself to regroup and enjoy a day. Your mind and body will thank you.
6. Talk it out
Everyone needs help sometimes. Go to a friend, a significant other, or a parent and let them know how you feel, just saying what your feeling out loud can be incredibly helpful. If the people in your life are anything like mine, they will either give you the best advice you ever heard, or they'll rush over with movies and some wine to make you feel better. Or they'll do both, either way, you'll feel loved and supported. All of us need that.
