6 Ways To Combat The Winter Blues

How to turn your frown upside down during holiday breaks.

6 Ways To Combat The Winter Blues

As the weather gets colder, I find that my motivation and overall happiness diminishes. My bed becomes my best friend, and the huge list of responsibilities I have collects dust on my desk. Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this?

As college students, we are all rejoicing about Thanksgiving and Christmas break being right around the corner – that also means, countless hours of complete boredom. Thankfully, I’m here for you guys. Here are six ways to get around the winter blues:

1. Spend time with friends and family

This one is pretty self-explanatory, but as college students, we need the TLC that our parents and siblings provide us. Help your mom cook dinner; watch that movie your sister has been dying to see; play football with your dad. Appreciate the little time you have to see your family and connect with them. Same goes for your friends – especially the friend from high school that you’ve been dying to catch up with.

2. Workout

Trust me, I know this one is hard – I can barely motivate myself to walk to get the mail. Once you put your gym clothes on and walk out the door, half the battle is done. The minute you actually start working out, you’ll be happy you’re there. Plus, you’ll be able to eat as much Thanksgiving stuffing and holiday treats as you want!

3. Job advancements

You’re literally sitting on your ass for the next month; why not apply to some internships or jobs? While you sit eating your grandmother's lemon bars, do yourself some good and start planning your future. Usually companies start releasing applications for summer internships in December, be the first to apply!

4. Focus on your hobby

Most of us have something we like to do for fun, right? Channel that skill or passion and perfect it. For example, I love to take photos and write. I took both of those interests and started a photo journal. Find an outlet where you can express yourself, your interests, and your creativity – let it flourish.

5. Experience something for the first time

When is the last time you did something for the first time? Here’s your chance. Nothing is more exhilarating than doing something you’ve wanted to do for a while. You learn so much about yourself when you experience something new. If you’ve been craving a trip, plan it and go! If you’ve been dying to try that new sushi place down the street, go! Nothing is holding you back – no more excuses.

6. Invest in yourself

I saved the most important for last. The school gods have gifted you three whole weeks to lounge around - seize the opportunity to take care of yourself. If you need to sleep for three days straight, do it. If you want to buy that dress you don’t need, go for it. Pamper yourself, re-invent yourself, do whatever feels best for YOU. Put your needs first for once.

Hopefully, these six tips help you have the best holiday break ever! If not, I sincerely apologize and hope we can work something out. Regardless, keep your head up during these last final weeks of school – you’re almost free!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
