Lock Haven University

Lock Haven University students often struggle to think of things to do in the small community surrounding campus. Small schools located in small communities usually don't have obvious attractions or events. Whether you're an avid adventurer or a homebody there is something for everyone in the community surrounding the small campus. It is a common misconception that there is absolutely nothing to do around town unless you're 21. All it takes is an open mind and a willingness to go out of your comfort zone.

1. Hyner View

Hyner is one of the most beautiful places to visit close to campus. A short drive away from campus, it's a nice small getaway from the stresses of college life. It's worth the short drive to Hyner to take in the gorgeous views of the surrounding area.

2. Roxy Theatre

The Roxy is a charming little movie theater located in the middle of downtown Lock Haven. Although they only show a few movies at a time, their selections are current and varied. Tickets are significantly cheaper than other theaters in closeby towns. It's perfect for a date night or just a night out with friends.

3. Ice Shack

Ice shack is THE place to get ice cream in the area, literally, it is the only place besides McDonalds or Wendy's. They have everything from Italian ice to ice cream to pretzels. It's perfect for those days where you need to treat yourself!

4. The Regatta

This once a year event happens every labor day weekend. It's filled with fair food, games and live entertainment as well as fireworks on certain nights. There is a beer tent for those who are 21 and over but be cautioned, this is where most of the professors that live locally hang out. The food itself is worth your time, I promise you won't be disappointed.

5. The Dike Levee

The dike is a popular place for locals to walk especially in the evening. It is built right along the Susquehanna river, offering unique views of the river and surrounding area. There is nothing like watching the sunrise or sunset while sitting in the stands alongside the river. The five-mile path perfect for a nice jog to relieve stress or leisurely walk to take in the views.

6. Haywoods On The Green

Haywoods is a beloved sports bar and grill located in Mill Hall (the five-minute drive is so worth it). Many students do not know about this restaurant, as I learned of its glory recently. They have drink specials every night, as well as a large and eclectic menu. Since there are a limited variety of restaurants around town, give Haywoods a try and it will become your go to resturant when asked where you want to go to eat.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
