6 Things Only Twins Understand

No you're not seeing double, that's just my twin

Believe it or not, twins experience even the simplist of things completely different from non-twin siblings. From going to school, friend groups, and if your same gender twins you rarely get to even have your own space to breath. Aside from the lack of individuality, having a twin comes in handy sometimes. Struggle or not, six things that I know you've experience if you're a twin are...

1. The matching clothes

In almost every baby picture, there we were in either the same exact thing or the same outfit in a different color. The only way you can tell the difference is the hair or a birthmark or something you and your twin had differently.

2. Never having your own birthday

Nobody appreciates having their own day, just a day all about them. I would if I wasn't a twin, what I would give to not have to hear the Happy Birthday song then at the part where the name comes in, everybody goes really fast and squeeze in both names...never just my own.

3. It's no big deal to us, but it is to everyone else

"Yeah I'm a twin" I shrug while people are amazed and proceed to ask questions about us. It's pretty cool when you think about it, like you were born with someone else! But us twins are used to it that it's just whatever now all these years later

4. People always confuse us

Honestly I'm a fraternal twin and people still mix us up so I feel like I can relate to identical twins. No matter how many times you try to tell certain people who is who, they just never get it right. So when people address me by my twins name I just answer because you got to pick your own battles and that one is not worth it.

5. Always being referred to as "the twins"

I can't eye roll this enough. At school, at home, with friends, nobody ever says your names because they know the shortcut..."The *last name* twins" or sometimes just "The twins". Just so everybody knows, even twins are different people with different names, we're two completely different people.

6. Having a forever friend

Yeah regular siblings are kinda forever friends too, but not like a twin bond. You always have a friend when starting a new school or sport or whatever. At parties and family events you're never bored because you have the twin bond. Then there's the unspoken rule that twin > everyone else. You're there for each other always and stick up for each other because nobody's going to love you like your twin does.

The last one really is amazing and the best part of being a twin. You grew up together and you know your twin better than you know yourself sometimes. It makes the name switches and questions worth it; twins are literally best friends forever and nobody can compete with that friendship.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
