Freshman year is a scary, but exciting experience with the start of a new journey. There are many different people, places, and things to explore. Here are six tips for incoming college freshman to help with the transition from high school to college.
1. Your GPA isn’t everything
Working hard in classes is important but your GPA doesn’t define who you are. Some majors are harder than others. Your roommate might have a 4.0 GPA while yours is a 3.2… Your GPA is just a number.College presents the opportunity to be involved in a large community; as long as you’re putting forward your best effort in not only academics but extra curricular activities, you’re going to excel despite your GPA.
2. Go to Class
You’re away at school to go to school.Keep in mind your main focus of school which is getting an education.There will be times where the weather is beautiful and you want to skip class for a beach trip; don’t do it.Staying on top of your work is the key to success, you have to attend class to learn in order to receive a good grade.

While you’re going through this new journey in life, your parents are adjusting as well.College is new and exciting to you, as it probably will be for them, but in a different way.Call home to say hi and see how your parents and family are, not just to remind them to pay your tuition.Invite your family for family weekend at your school and even for the homecoming football game, they will feel involved and important.
5. Become Personable With Your Professors
Class sizes can vary from 20 to 200 people.It’s important to leave a good impression on your professors and become familiar with them.You might end up needing their help with a letter of recommendation somewhere down the road.It’s important to show respect for your professors by not disruptively walking in late for their lecture, and leaving early.Maintaining professional relationships is beneficial for your future and can present job opportunities.
6. Stay Organized
Either it be with your room or school work, staying organized is essential for being successful. Having a calendar is a necessary tool in being organized.You don’t want to get caught missing an assignment or important meeting.Professors in college have no mercy; they set due dates and rarely accept excuses or late work.Keeping your room clean and in tip-top shape will help contain stress and your mind will feel more clear as well.
