So it is time to for you to pick the place that you will spend the next four (or five) years of your life and you are probably starting to feel the pressure. As someone who is now the wise college senior, here are a few tips to help you pick your new home away from home.
1. Large vs. small student population
Schools with both a large and small population are out there! It is important to think about what kind of community you want to be a part of.
2. Large vs. small classes
If you prefer a smaller class size, then a smaller university is probably fit for you. However, if you like to be in seminars with 200 people, then the larger university is yours!
3. Public vs. private
Public and private universities are very different for a variety of reasons. However, the main one is money. No matter what type of university you choose, scholarships are important for reducing the costs of college. Apply for every single one. Trust me.
4.Liberal arts vs. research university
At most liberal arts university, like the one I attend, students are required to take a variety of classes outside of their major. For me, this has been instrumental in finding my career path. On the flip side, my boyfriend goes to research university that has allowed countless opportunities to research and dive into their majors. It is up to you as to what you choose!
5. Take tours
Visit the campuses of potential schools. Get to know people on that campus. Look at the dorm rooms. You can only learn so much from a website. Take trips. Many high schools, at least the ones around NC, provide excused absence days for college visits.
6. Ask questions
When you're in a group of potential students, be that person to ask questions. I guarantee that someone else is thinking it.
7. Does it feel right?
This is the place you will be spending the next four or five years of your life. Trust your gut.
As a final word of advice, I want to tell you that it is okay to be scared. This is a new season of life. Just remember to have fun, be safe, study hard, and embrace this once in a lifetime experience called college!
