If you're like me, you either are on spring break from your college/university or you're just heading back. I only make it home a few times a year but every time I come home to my parents, I have such an amazing appreciation for what happens when you head back to your roots.
1. Family
There is nothing greater than getting off an airplane and having any member of your family or loved ones standing there and hugging you so close. Most college students are far away from their family and rarely get the chance to stop by just for a quick dinner. I have grown so much appreciation for them since I moved out. Our relationships get better and nobody is asking you where you've been all night, and for that, we are able to grow and mature into being our own independent selves!
2. Your Parents' Fridge
Ok, I'm not going to lie, raiding my parents fridge after I get out from a night with my friends is probably the greatest surprise ever. When I come home, my mom gets me all of the goodies that I can't afford on my college budget. Pricey cheeses, organic hummus, you name it–Mom will cook it, and it's in there for my late night snacks. Here's to you, Mom, you're the real MVP here.
3. Friends
"We get by with a little help from our friends," The Beatles say, and I agree! I am so fortunate to feel so loved by so many people in my hometown. I sense so much eagerness to see me and to catch up, to go check out to some music or just have a kickback to hangout like old times. This spring break, I surprised my best friend who I've been close with for about eight years. She and none of my other friends had any idea I was heading back, and the excitement and anticipation of making her week made me so happy! The hardest part is finding time to get everyone in. I usually try to be out in a social setting to get the max amount of face time with my friends. However, as I'm getting older, I'm valuing my closer friendships more and having to stray away from acquaintances that are not heading in an upward motion. Regardless, a warm smile and a hug from anyone you know is such a rewarding feeling.
4. Your Fur Babies
If you're like me, your pets are the light of your life. They understand nothing but your unconditional love and are so eager to give it right back. Whether you're a cat person or a dog lover, they'll recognize you and never leave you alone.
5. Your Closet
Oh, the feelings of shame and hilarity you feel when opening up your closet when you get home. There are probably some fashion choices you made that you were unsure of at the time or wore a few times and stayed there because it was definitely not college worthy. I recently just went through mine and noticed how much my personal style has changed over the past four years alone. As a young woman, I've cut out things that were deemed "cute" and transitioned to a more sophisticated look. Don't be afraid of the trash bags and donations to companies like Good Will or the Salvation Army. If you're confident that your clothes could be worth something, take it to a consignment shop and see what extra pocket change you can take back to college with you! Beer fund, maybe?
6. Memories
I saved the most emotional one for last. Going back to your hometown means refacing memories and experiences (negative and positive) that you'll probably think about slightly, which could bring up repressed feelings. However, this "full circle" is actually a great time to reflect on how much stronger you are, how much more of an adult you've become or even how much everything around you has changed. I believe in assessing your growth periodically because you've got to stay on track and make sure you never replay the same mistake twice. Keep your head up, you're on the right track and nothing would ever happen if you never left your comfort zone!
Smile and be grateful for the small things in your life!
