So, the time is finally here.
We’re dropping you off for your freshman year of college today, and it all seems surreal.
I don’t know how or when you got this old, or how this much time has passed so quickly. As your older sister, I’ve known and loved you since before you could walk, or talk, or do anything really. My childhood was shaped around you (and our older brother, but I’ll save that for another time), and although we may have slightly annoyed each other sometimes, you are, and always will be, one of the most important and special people in my life.
We have more shared experiences than one could possibly count (a very literal lifetime of memories) and each one, whether it be small or significant, is treasured. I think back to all the days we would spend together, from playing with barbie dolls in the basement for hours on end, to playing games in the pool on hot summer days, to sitting outside on the swing set just enjoying each other’s company.
You were brought into my life without my say in the matter, and by choice, you have remained my best friend. Quite honestly, I don’t know what I’d do without you.
When I look at you now, sometimes I still see the little girl with dirty blonde ringlets and a big personality who followed me everywhere I went. I’ve had the opportunity to watch you become the amazing young woman you are today, and I want you to know how proud I am of you and all that you are. For the first time ever, we will be separating from each other. It’ll be an adjustment for sure, but all for a good cause. I’m so happy for you.
As you begin this exciting journey in your life, there are a few things I’d like you to know and remember:
1. You will be fine. I promise.
The first week will probably be the hardest because you’re in a completely new environment, being thrown into the unknown. Don’t let this intimidate you. You will get used to everything faster than you think; your school will become your home away from home soon enough. Be yourself and people will love you.
2. Friends, even best friends, come and go. And that’s okay.
I’ve had my fair share of “best” friends that are no longer in my life. We either had a falling out or simply just grew apart. Regardless of how it happened, it happened and I’m fine. It might feel like the end of the world, and it might hurt like crazy to lose someone that’s close with you, but it is okay. Sounds cliche, but it does happen for a reason. And your life will move on, in a positive direction, with people who are there to stay.
3. Classes will be more intense, but you will learn so much. Pay attention.
Yes, college is hard. The workload for your courses will be more than you’re used to, and time management will become a very important skill that you must learn to stay on top of everything. You will be on your own. There will be no nagging parents there to remind you of what you have to do; you have to be the one to make responsible choices and stay on top of your game. Go to class with energy and a desire to learn something new. Maintain a healthy work-life balance, have fun, and get your assignments done.
4. Put yourself out there & get out of your comfort zone. It’ll pay off in the end.
Whether it be with a club, a class, or just an unfamiliar social setting, put yourself out there. Be social, and make decisions that you may not normally make. You’ll find yourself in these types of situations quite often, so you might as well be proactive in meeting new people, speaking your mind, or learning new skills. The moment you’re completely comfortable in everything you’re doing is the moment you need to challenge yourself to do something new.
5. Discover your passions, and follow them wherever they lead.
One of my absolute favorite things about who you are is your passion for all things you love. You are so determined to achieve success in the fields of your interest, and because of this determination you will be successful. Your creativity and wit will take you far in anything you do. Never be afraid to follow your heart wherever it takes you, even if it’s not in the direction you thought you were headed. Just go with it.
6. I will miss you, so much. I’m always here.
You know this, and I know you will miss me too. There’s not much to say besides I love you, more than I could ever say. I wish you all the best, and look forward to all the stories you have for me when you come home. I’ll see you soon enough.
