Other majors don't under how much work goes into doing school work and writing news stories. Being a student journalist means you always have to be prepared and be on the look out for stories.
1. A notebook is constantly in your hand.
If you are a student journalist, you always have your reporter notebook handy. If breaking news hits right after class you don't have to worry because you are prepared.
2. You make sure your recording app is downloaded and ready to go.
This is an essential. A recording app is a must if you are interviewing someone or want to get a good soundbite for your SOT (sound on tape).
3. Gloating about how creative your summary news lead to people who have no idea what a summary news lead is.
You are so excited that you came up with a creative lead, so you share it with your friends, who are not journalism majors. They don't really understand your excitement.
4. You’re always on alert just in case if you have to cover breaking news or events.
That’s where the notebook and recording app come into play. You are always eavesdropping on other students to see if they are talking about any interesting upcoming events. Or running to the spot where breaking news hits 10 minutes before class gets out.
5. Spending hours and hours on research and interviews.
Student journalists don't just work on stories for classes, we get real experience as well like through student media. Instead of writing a three page paper that is due soon, you are doing research and spending time interviewing people even if it is for fun.
6. Annoying your social media friends with your journalistic accomplishments.
You don’t know how many times I have shared my published stories to Facebook. Not only do you post stories you have worked on, you post articles and memes related to your major and the work you are doing. We are so proud of our work and want to share it with friends and family.
