When I joined my sorority, one of the things that the older members advised us to do was to live in the house. And after spending some time there, I realized that it was something all members should do. So when I got the opportunity, I jumped on it, and it was icing on the cake that I got to be roommates with one of my best friends. Living in a sorority house isn't at all what movies and TV shows make it out to be. Here's a glimpse into what it's like.
1. You have 20+ closets to chose from when you have nothing to wear.
It's the best kind of shopping—you don't have to spend any money! It's also cool when one of your sisters has the same shoe size as you. Don't be a serial borrower though—make sure you return your items!
2. There's always someone around.
Need to run to the store? The library? Just want to talk? Knock on almost any door and someone's head should pop out.
3. Not having toilet paper is a constant problem.
You'd be surprised as to how fast a group of girls can through a pack of toilet paper. The stuff is treated like gold around here.
4. As is privacy.
Don't get me wrong, I love my roommate and all the girls that live in the house. But unless you have a private room or a MIA roommate, there's a good chance you'll be with at least one sister for the majority of your time in the house. There are just some times when you want to be alone.
5. The kitchen is a war zone.
Someone threw away your leftovers from your favorite Japanese restaurant or those cupcakes you just bought. There's no ketchup for your Chick-fil-A you just trekked across campus to obtain. The trash is full... again. Someone left the oven on, or, my most personal favorite, set off the fire alarm from cooking popcorn.
6. The house can never stay clean.
You'd be surprised how messy 100+ girls can be.
Even though living in the house can be chaotic, stressful, and very loud, you become insanely close with all the sisters you share it with. You learn to work together to keep your home clean and weekend sappy movie nights help you bond. If you haven't lived in your sorority house, do it. I promise, you won't regret it.
