Instead of complaining how awful our hometown is, let's embrace the people and businesses of the community we live in. I understand that it may be hard to find things to do, so I have done the research for you! Here's a short list of ideas that are new and thriving in our community and won't break the bank or waste your gas:
1. Holey Toledough
These handcrafted donuts are hard to resist. Unique flavors change weekly and are sold at few locations which makes each visit special. Check out Black Kite Coffee Shop, Flying Joe Coffee Shop and the Toledo farmers market in order to try your first of many delicious donuts. Follow them on Instagram for flavor updates at @holeytoledough.
2. Local Coffee Shops
It’s time to move on from Starbucks and try the local shops offered around town! Black Kite Coffee Shop is located in the old west end and serves a variety of coffees, teas and pies made from scratch. Made from scratch. You can expect a relaxed, artsy atmosphere. Another one of my favorites, Flying Joe, is located just outside Toledo in Perrysburg. Flying Joe serves fair-trade coffee in a series of frozen and hot beverages. I highly recommend the honey cinnamon latte! Also, don’t forget that on Fridays if you post a picture of your drink and tag #FJF, you get a dollar off your next drink.
3. Centennial Terrace
You may be familiar with the quarry, but this venue isn’t just for swimming! They hold several events over the summer. For those of you who are country music fans, Tyler Farr will be here July 2! Mark you calendar for Glass City Burger Battle on July 15, Pizza Palooza on the 22 and Craft at the Quarry on 29.
4. Farmers Market
The Toledo Farmer's Market takes place on Saturday’s at 525 Market Street in downtown Toledo from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can enjoy locally grown fruits and veggies, handmade jewelry, bath bombs, soaps and more. Don’t forget to walk all the way through to find plants, baked goods and other local products. It’s the perfect start to a great weekend!
5. The Toledo Zoo
The Toledo Zoo has just launched their newest addition, The Aerial Adventure Course. The challenge course is a series of obstacles including robe bridges, climbing walls and more. If you really feel up to the challenge, make sure you do the zip line and sky bridge. For the extra adrenaline rush, take part in the quick drop and free flight, which both allow you to jump and slide 30 feet!
6. Mud Hens Baseball
Baseball games are classic summer time fun! Discover Hensville for a new way to experience the Mudhens by using rooftop views and live entertainment. Catch a Friday or Saturday game in order to enjoy a fireworks show. Follow this link for a schedule of upcoming Hensville events: http://hensvilletoledo.com/hensville-events/
