With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it is the time of year we like to think about what we are thankful for. Sure, everyone says they are thankful for their loved ones and good food and those are certainly things to be appreciative of, but often times people overlook the things you never really think about. This holiday season, try to be thankful of some of these little things.
"Bad" music.
It's like the expression "there is no good without evil." Without bad music, we wouldn't really appreciate good music. If you didn't get annoyed with songs that are over played on the radio, would your favorite song be as much of a relief as it is?
Deodorant.
OK, so maybe you don't need to be thankful for Old Spice or Dove, but rather be thankful that you have something to sweat over. Whether you have to book it between classes, you get the nervous-sweats in front of the person you like, or the sun is beating down on you, it is important to remember you're lucky to be getting an education, to be around the person you like, or to be outside in the sunshine. If you're sweating the small stuff at school or at work, be thankful that you have small stuff to sweat.
Vegetables.
There are a very select few people who truly enjoy eating their vegetables. That being said, they prevent us from dying (because I personally enjoy eating so I don't die). Be thankful for vegetables not only because they give your body what it needs but because you have food on your dinner table. I would rather eat brussels sprouts than nothing at all.
Neighbors.
Sometimes they're the people with dogs that poop on your lawn. Sometimes they're the people who party until 3 a.m. Sometimes they're the people who borrow a cup of sugar whenever they bake. Whether or not you like them, they're your neighbors. They are part of what make the place you live home. Be thankful you have a home because millions don't.
Heartbreak.
Anyone who has lost someone at some point in their life has probably felt some disdain towards their loss. But once enough time passes, you realize that it is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. Yes, it may be painful, but those are the moments that teach you to appreciate the people you love when you have them.
Holes in your socks.
It isn't the fact that you've worn a pair of socks out and have to get new ones, it is the fact that you have worn a pair of socks out because you have travelled so far. Appreciate where you have been, not just where you are going.
What I'm trying to say is we should all be thankful for what we have, not wishful for what we don't have. At the end of the day we woke up, we had roof over our heads, and we had a phone or computer to read this article on. Be thankful for everything, after all, 'tis the season.
