We love our Indian parents, we really do, but there are a few quirks that come with being a child with Indian parents.
1. Your room has to be clean all the time.
Your room better be clean 24/7 for the eternal fear that some relative will show up to your house and do a surprise room check and then eternally judge you and your family because of your messy room.
2. The dishes.
No, they cannot wait until tomorrow or another time when you might have more energy, because a messy kitchen is a messy house. So the dishes are done, even if your homework isn't.
3. Pronunciation.
Whether we care to admit it or not, our parents are smarter than us and probably have a larger vocabulary, but along with their Indian accents, comes an entertaining pronunciation of a couple words here and there that will inevitably cause a fight.
4. Comparisons.
Your parents will constantly compare your friends, siblings and even strangers to you. It gets frustrating, but you know they only have your best interests at heart.
5. When you wanna go out.
Before you even think about leaving the house, your parents must know all the details. You better submit a detailed essay about location, boys, all the names of people attending and an exact return time.
6. Guilt trips.
Let's say you come back five minutes after the time you promised them: you will be faced with the famous line "how can I sleep not knowing my daughter/son is safe in the house?" Which is also supposed to be an adequate explanation for them staying awake past their usual sleep time of 9:00 p.m.
Despite dealing with all the quips that come with being raised by Indian parents, you love them because they somehow manage to do something even greater: deal with you.
