She's my best friend, she's my worst enemy, she's my therapist, my entertainment, my hero, and my mother. Growing up with a single mom has been one of the greatest experiences I could imagine, and even though I could spend hours talking about how grateful I am, here are 6 things that only girls with single moms will understand.

1. Every night is girls' night

This could not be more true. As an only child living with a single mom, girls' night was a daily occurrence. Whether it was dancing around in the kitchen while we made dinner, or eating popcorn and watching Hairspray (for the 50th time), spending the night watching movies and gossiping about boy problems and mean girls was the best thing ever.

2. She is the best listener

Trying to hide something from her cannot be done, it's like she has a 6th sense. I am convinced that she has eyes and ears in all places, at all times. There is nothing you can hide from her, and when I'm feeling down or angry, she knows right away. This works perfectly because I then proceed to vent to her for over an hour about daily drama and boy troubles.

3. She is always right

I mean always. That time she told you that your friends were not going to treat you the way you deserved, she was right. That time she told you not to worry about all the drama that comes along with high school, she was right. That time she told you to work harder in order to achieve what she knows you can, she was right, and she loves hearing it.

4. You love her and hate her at the same time

It's the best and the worst feeling ever. She is your biggest supporter, and your harshest critic. There have been times where we are in screaming fits arguing about something not nearly as important as we make it out to be, but we always make up within a matter of minutes. She pushes you harder than anyone else, and sometimes you two may not agree, but in the end you know that she wants the absolute best for you.

5. Even though you live together, you still have to find time to hang out

Busy is her middle name. She is working her butt of to provide for you, and with constantly conflicting schedules, it can be hard to spend quality time together. By the time I wake up she is out the door, and by the time she gets home, I'm out to dinner! It's okay though, because we never fail to keep in touch with dumb jokes and endless emoji combinations over text.

6. She is your hero, and nothing can change that

She is the ultimate mom, and you wouldn't want it any other way. What other person on this earth is going to provide for you, laugh with you, let you cry on their shoulder at 1 am, and cheer you on in achieving your dreams all at the same time? No one. She's basically the mortal version of Superwoman, and you can't believe you get to call her 'mom'.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
