6 Things I Learned My Freshman Year Of College

Oh man, where do I even start? I guess I have to think back to the very beginning, which was like 8 months ago (WHAT?!) Anyway, I would have to say looking back at my photos from my first few weeks of college; it brings back a lot of memories, feelings and emotions. The day before I left for college I was an emotional train wreck, I cried all day. I didn’t want to leave the comfort of having my family, my dog and my friends at home. It was terrifying and I was so nervous about what was to come. Change is very hard for me personally, I don’t like it at first, but once I get adjusted I turn out just great. This year went by so fast, it was amazing and now that it is finally summer, I am going to share a few things I learned this year!

1. You will miss home and your family

I know many of you are probably itching to get out of the house and to be free and independent, and the freedom of college is great, but there will be times when all you want is a hug from mom and to sleep in your own bed. That’s okay it’s completely normal! This time in your life is a huge transition; you are leaving the only thing you have ever known for 18 years, so of course you are going to miss home!

2. There’s an adjustment period

This amount of time is different for everyone, but there is a length of time where everything is brand new and strange and you’re learning the ropes, meeting new people and it’s a little scary! It took me about a month to get adjusted and into the swing of things, and then I really started to love college, it’s a new chapter in your life so it’s ok to be scared, but be excited because its only going get better!

3. Be Yourself

We hear this cliché a thousand times, but it’s true, always be yourself. When you meet new people, show them the real you because the real you is marvelous! People are going to like the true, genuine you-trust me!

4.College is WAY different than High School

I love college for many reasons, but one of them is that there is no social hierarchy like there is in high school. That is one thing I did not like about high school, people thinking they were better than others, and the cliques. There will be some things you will miss about high school, for me, I miss knowing my teacher and them knowing you, in college a lot of times you just go to lecture and you never really talk to the professor because they have hundreds of students a day. But, the things I love about college heavily outweigh what I miss about high school!

5.You are going to change

You may not change completely, but there will be things that you notice that are different about yourself, for me personally I feel that I have become more confident, outgoing, and have “come out of my shell” this year. I have grown a lot as a person and I have honestly never been happier!

6. IT WILL BE FUN!

This year went by so fast, and I had an absolute blast. Even though school makes me want to rip my hair out sometimes, the incredible memories I have outweigh all of that. I met some really awesome people this year and have made friends that I know I will have for a lifetime. College is one heck of an adventure and you future freshies have a lot to look forward to!

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
