6 Things Last Week's Election Taught Us

If you needed some perspective

6 Things Last Week's Election Taught Us

The election is over, but it seems as if the weight of it all drags on this past week. Some people are thrilled, some are nonchalant, some are angry, and some are exhausted altogether. Each emotion is valid.

But if you feel like the world is still divided, that there is no hope left for our country, I encourage you to think about these things. I encourage you to try to live a live where you do these things a little more. I promise you, it makes it that much better.

1. Look for the best in people.
Look for the good. Look for what people have to offer. Look for it in people that you disagree with entirely, because if you do, you’re going to be able to love them just the same. It’s a glass half full kind of concept.

2. Keep your values tucked close.
The only way you can lose is if you let go of all of the things that make you who you are. Don’t let your opinions close off your mind. Don’t let the difference in opinions change the amount of respect you have for others as human beings. Don’t let one aspect of life, politics, change every other part of who you’ve become. And most importantly, never let anything you hear or see make you doubt the person you’ve built.

3. Look up.
Look up at the sky. Look up at the sunrise that came today, just like every other day, with the promise of new. A new day. Look up at the people around you. Look up at everything else that your life entails that cannot be affected by politics. Look up, because if you keep looking down, I promise you that you’re going to miss something.

4. Check your privilege.
Checking your privilege is close-by on the path of optimism. Every single person in this world is privileged in some way. Some are lucky to have many, some have to learn to live with the few they’ve been handed. However, your privilege is not equivalent to your worth. Check them, and be honored that you can.

5. Channel your energy.
Channel your energy into production, into ambition and change. Let the election spark new ideas, new goals, and new aspirations. Let the results, whether you found them ideal or not, open your eyes to things you’ve looked past before.

6. Don’t miss out on opportunities for happiness.
Each day spent in the darkness is one less that you get of light. We are not infinite; we do not get forever. How many of those days do you want to waste? If you allow happiness to flood into your life, it will.

Don’t be afraid to let it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
