6 Things I Sort Of Miss From High School

I would never go back, but it doesn't hurt to reminisce every once in awhile.

6 Things I Sort Of Miss From High School
Newsweek

Admit it. Once in awhile, well maybe once in a blue moon, you kinda sorta miss how easy life was back then when you were in high school. Of course, the freedom of college is ten times better than the annoying boundaries high school set around everyone, but if you could go back just one more time, would you? I know I would pass up on that offer, but I can't help to kinda sorta miss these few things about these four years of my life..

1. "The Freshman Fifteen" did not exist in high school.

Thanks to the health restrictions high schools are supposed to have, we did not rely on Sheetz, McDonald's, Wawas, Burger King, or any other fast food place a broke college student can afford. Oh, and our parents' awesome homemade cooking was definitely healthier & better than our on-campus dining. It probably took us two years to gain fifteen pounds in high school. While in college, well, we all know how that goes. Also, we were forced to workout in high school.. remember that class called gym?

2. You were forced to be surrounded by people all day, so you could not escape social interaction.

Most of us are introverted-extroverts; we talk & socialize when we want to, but once we get our daily dose of socialization, we would rather run home, and hide in our rooms because talking is too exhausting! In high school you were forced to see your friends, even those who you weren't that fond of. In college, you can do everything alone: eat, study, get coffee, etc.. Then you can go home and spend even more time alone if you wanted to! So, you were never hit with that, "you never see or make time for me anymore," from your friends because seeing them in school counted for something, right?

3. You were considered athletic in high school if you played a sport.

If you do not play in college, you are considered a NARP (Non-Athletic Regualr Person.) Yep, this term is used in college, and there is not much to say about it. Just because you played a sport in high school (you could have been the best athlete in your school), doesn't mean it will mean anything in college! And this is when us NARPs turn to intramural sports to seem kinda athletic.

4. Does anyone else remember studying in high school? I don't.

I've always said this; it's not that I did not study in high school because I definitely know I did. I just can't remember doing so. In college, we take five courses with ten times more the amount of work. In high school, there were like eight classes, and I never remember being stressed or burned out from it. Probably the number one thing I miss.

5. You can actually have a job in high school and save money.

It definitely doesn't help that on-campus jobs pay students minimum wage, but on top of that, we have to pay rent, utilities, books, expensive parking passes when there's not even parking on campus half of the time, gas, food, and recreational activities. I was working maybe 16 hours a week in high school and was able to buy my first car as well have extra money go places too. As soon as direct deposit hits your account in college, guaranteed that money is gone within a few days.

6. High school tried to make you a little productive.

Remember Study Hall? You were kinda forced to get a little of your work done, but forget that in college. The only time taken out of the day for you to get something done was all up to how motivated you were feeling that day. Oh, and if it's super nice out on a Saturday and you swore to yourself, "I am dedicating this day to study for my exam," forget it!! There is no way in heck you'll be sitting in the library on a 75 degree February day (trust me, this was me last weekend). So, in reality, you'll be cramming for that exam or paper the night before, but it's okay, there will be tons of people in the same boat as you.

Reminiscing about high school as a college student is completely normal. But wishing you can go back? Not in my best interest, but it's always nice to look back on the things you miss when life was sort of easier.

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
