Dating in 2016 is hard. I mean it has become complicated. But they hardest part is when you do not meet the idea of what a couple should look like. We are living in a society where gay marriage has finally been accepted (which is a wonderful thing). But, people are still confused at the idea of interracial relationships. As a black girl who has more often than not has dated a guy who has never been the same race as her, the backlash has been incredible.
The most insane part is how people look at an interracial couple out in public is the oddest thing. It is almost like being an animal in a surprise exhibit at the zoo. People are generally angry, amazed, or shocked that people are dating outside of their race in this current day and age. As a girl who was once in an interracial relationship, there are just some things that these couples are tired of hearing.
1. "Is your family OK with your boyfriend/girlfriend being <insert race here>?"
Here is the thing, this question will never sound right no matter how you word it. It is almost insinuating that one of the families in the interracial couple is not going to be accepting of the other. Not everyone is a bigot or ignorant.
2. "So is this like a fetish?"
A fetish is like BDSM or touching feet... Me dating outside of race is not a fetish, it is just a person who I am attracted to and he happens to be a different race than I.
3. "Oh, that's cool. You know I almost dated a <insert race here> girl/guy once."
Did you really.... Not sure how that helps me, but cool.
4. "Wouldn't you prefer to date someone who is like you?"
If I wanted someone like me I would date myself
5. "Do you hate being <insert race here>?"
Seriously... c'mon now.
6. "Aww, your kids are going to be beautiful!"
Thank you, but seriously, we are not just some fantasy for the perfect children.
