6 Things I'm Gonna Miss About My Freshman Dorm

Most people dread dorm life coming into college, hearing endless horror stories about freshman roommates, having to share one bathroom with your entire floor and of course, fearing various insects and rodents. But now that my freshman year has finally come to a close, I gotta say that dorm life treated me well. While I'm very excited to move into my more spacious and definitely newer sophomore dorm, my freshman dorm is always going to have a special place in my heart. So here are the things that I'm gonna miss next year.

1. Actually living on campus.

It's all about location. Being about a five-minute walk from pretty much anything on campus was so convenient and allowed leeway for me to roll out of bed at the last minute possible and still make it to lecture on time.

2. Running frantically from room to room when getting ready for date party or formal, borrowing all your floormates' makeup, nail polish, etc.

My freshman floor was mostly girls, so there was always someone who had something you needed. Whether it was an eyelash curler or a second opinion before you headed out the door, my floormates always had my back.

3. Eating all the food and candy from your RA's room.

And even though the dining hall was less than a two-minute walk away, it was always better when my RA had bowls of candy, oreos or even hella burnt pizza rolls for all the residents.

4. All-nighters in the hallway with your neighbors when you're too lazy to go to the library.

Even when that paper was kicking my ass, it was always better with my housemates to motivate me to keep going at 3 a.m.

5. Random jam sessions and singing our hearts out to our favorite 2000s throwbacks.

Jonas Brothers, Natasha Bedingfield, and Vanessa Carlton. Enough said.

6. Coming home to a group of people you now consider family.

Coming into college, I never thought I'd be as close with the people who lived in my freshman dorm as I am now. My dorm mates were a huge support system for me this first year: people to vent to when you felt like you bombed that exam, people to cry to when school seemed too overwhelming and people to laugh with about all the crazy things we did after a successful night out. And even though we all did our own things during the day, it was nice to have a group of people to come home to when it was all over. I'm gonna miss going across the hall, up a floor, or around the corner to find some of my best friends. I'm gonna miss the random 10 minute conversations in the bathroom and in the hallway. I'm gonna miss the family that my freshman dorm gave me.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
