6 Struggles of Having Unnaturally Colored Hair

Whether it's pastel pink or bright blue, we all have our shared problems

Everyone these days wants uniquely colored hair. Whether it's a gentle ash pink tint to your natural blonde or a full electric blue head, dyeing hair is a dream for many people. However, there is a big misconception about coloring your hair. Although it is trendy and pretty when done right, it is difficult to maintain. To those of us that managed to actually color our hair an unnatural color, we know the struggles well. Here are 6 struggles you have to deal with when you color, bleach, and damn your hair to hell.

1. You have to set apart a whole day for hair maintenance.

Oh, it's Saturday night? Too bad. Tonight is the night you have to deep condition the ends so that your hair stops ripping apart at a gentle gust of wind. You have to lather your hair in bright blue dye so that the color doesn't fade to that rusty undertone. Then don't forget to slather on oils and essence so that it survives til the end of the week. Yeah, that's the typical Saturday night.

2. Your hair will never be as soft as before.

You swear you take better care of your hair now than you did ever before. But, for whatever reason (probably the 4 layers of bleach treatment), your hair always feels more brittle than before. You comb, you brush, and you deep condition but nope. It will never be the same.

3. All your things are the color of your hair.

My hair is blue. So is the floor. And the shower walls. And my pillow. You can wash out the color all you want but one drop of water makes your hair color bleed all over everything you love.

4. You can't decide which color to go for next

Next time I'm thinking about going pink. Or purple? Maybe I'll do a mix of the two. There are so many options once you've dyed it one color and you just can't decide which color to do. You wish you could just change it every week. Maybe you will.

5. You always get comments on your hair

Most people are just genuinely interested in your unique hair. They want to know how you did it, where you went, how long it took, how much money it cost. You understand where the interest comes from because hey, you didn't ALWAYS have pastel pink hair. But sometimes, it does get a little annoying.

6. You never want to go back to natural colors

Even with all the struggles you have to go through to maintain your gorgeous, albeit damaged, locks, it's all worth it. You never want to go back to having simple natural colored hair. You're willing to sit in a chair for 8+ hours again to bleach your hair so that you can color it again. You're addicting to this lifestyle but hey, at least your hair looks beautiful.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
