Schools come in all shapes and sizes all over the world. The creativity of educators and institutions never ceases to amaze me. Here are some schools in the oddest locations.
1. On a cattle ranch and alfalfa farm [Deep Springs College]
Located on a cattle ranch and alfalfa farm, Deep Springs College is near Bishop, California. Only 12 to 15 students are admitted to this unique school each year.
2. Secluded Islands [Venice International University]
How many schools can say they have their own island? Venice International University, located on the Island of San Servolo, Italy about an hour away from the historic Venice by ferry.
3. In a Cave [Guizhou Cave School]
Although shut down by the government in 2011, this remarkable school was created inside a cave when the government refused to build a school in Miao, one of the poorest provinces in the China. The school had makeshift classrooms and even a basketball court for recess.
4. In an Underpass [India Underpass School]
With a population as large as India's, a school that provides free education for children is always welcome and that is exactly what this "under the bridge" school has to offer.
5. Floating Schools [Makoko Floating School]
Can your school float? The Makoko Floating School can. Built for the water community of Makoko in Lagos, Nigeria, this school is a pilot project that aims to meet the social and physical needs for a school.
6. Underground Bunker [Abo Elementary School]
Equiped as a fallout shelter, Abo Elementary School aims to educate their students from underground. Built in 1962, during the height of the Cold War in Artesia, New Mexico.
Did you see any schools that surprised you? I know I did. I knew that people would do anything to fulfill a need but I did not even consider that schools could be underground, float, exist in a cave, or squeeze into an underpass. Now I know differently.
