6 steps to have a healthy & happy school year

As summer comes to an end and the school semester gets closer, we wonder what will happen to our social lives once we are drowning in oceans of homework. Have no fear! I have tips on how to keep a healthy social life while also being a great student at the same time!

1. Get involved!

The easiest way to make friends is getting involved! There are many ways to get involved in school, whether they are intramural sports, student government, or clubs of any kind. I highly recommend being a part of something you enjoy. Finding something to be a part of leads you to people with common interest. Whether you are interested in sewing or body building, there are always others that like the same thing and could use a friend. While getting involved seems a bit time consuming you will always be around other students some may be in a similar class or have taken your class before. Easy way to get some tips on a teacher or class and even help if you need it!

2. Study groups

Study groups are a great way to stay social while getting a better understanding on any class. Always talk to other people in your class, sometimes when you feel like the teacher isn't explaining something super well another student can explain better and vise versa. Study groups are also helpful for just getting to know people with a similar major or taking other classes like yours.

3. Explore your campus

Many people are super shy and don't really do good when talking to people they have never met before. I am the complete opposite and honestly some of my closest friends are people that I randomly talked to. Easiest way to start a conversation is by complimenting someone or maybe their clothes, then follow up with "where did you buy that" or "what's your major" it's simple. In college everyone is in the exact same boat as you and they want to make friends just as much. Don't be scared to put yourself out there! You might make a life time friend!

4. Sleep

In college we eventually learn how to live without this one, but that does not make it any less important! Sleep is good for your health and allows you to pay better attention in class. Sometimes napping during the day can be very beneficial for you and naps should be only as long as 20 - 30 minutes to be truly affective. Any longer and you will feel drowsy or even more tired than you did before the nap.

5. Stay active

By active I do not mean a full blown two hour workout five out of seven days a week. Staying active can be as simple as a walk in the park or even a easy 10 minute jog. Just because you don't have a six pack or huge arms does not mean you are unhealthy. Health is with in and it does not matter how you look on the outside. Some benefits of being active are, you fall asleep easier at night and if you work out in the morning you will be more alert during your day!

6. Diet

In college one of the hardest things to have is a healthy diet. When we are home we can always depend on our parents to force us to eat our fruits and vegetables but when you're a broke college student some times that dollar cheese burger looks a lot better to your wallet then the five dollar salad. Best way to manage your budget and good foods is by buying fruit or vegetables that last. A lot of fruit goes bad within 2 weeks and things like frozen fruits or vegetables can be kept for a bit longer and will have a way better affect on your body than eating pizza and cheese burgers. Benefits to better eating is simply feeling better about yourself and looking better as well!

School is on it's way! I hope everyone has the best semester yet and I really hope these tips helped you figure out what changes you want to make this semester.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
