Let’s be real—college is stressful and the mental breakdowns are innumerable. On average, most of us have probably at least one a week...if not more. If we’re to be completely honest with ourselves, nine times out of 10, it’s over something ridiculous. Or maybe it’s just the overwhelming amount of things that have to be done in a small amount of time. The point is, college is hard, and breakdowns are inevitable.
1. The Brain Snap
So it all begins with what I like to call, "The Brain Snap." Because that's literally what it feels like. Basically, during this stage, you feel overwhelmed, and focusing on anything school-related is a big joke. You'll probably cry because you feel as though you've hit rock bottom (I hit rock bottom like twice a week). Then comes the...
2. Vegetive State
The "I'm dead inside" phase. During this phase, you often catch yourself staring into the deep, dark abyss that is your future. This is the point of extreme procrastination as you contemplate what the point of college really is. Do you really want/need the degree you're going to school for anyways? Or maybe you’re simply fantasizing about pizza rolls. Or, most likely, thinking about nothing important at all. Whatever the circumstances are, the point is, you are not doing your work. Focusing is simply out of the question.3. Crying Round Two
So maybe you cried a little in stage one, but this is when it gets extreme. You break your vegetive state and realize you’ve been daydreaming scenarios for about, oh, I don’t know… Four hours. Then you realize you’ve accomplished nothing and you’re simply a complete and utter failure. So, of course, ugly sobbing will ensue.
4. Acceptance
Wow. You’re a failure. You've just wrecked your life, thrown your scholarships out the window, etc. No big deal. Guess it's time to drop out since you'll no longer be able to afford school. Your mom is going to cry. But hey, who needs doctors, right? Just throw your dreams out the window. This is fine.
5. Psych!
Ha, just kidding. You can’t drop out, nerd. Time to crank that paper out in 30 minutes, even though it's due in 31. Believe me, you got this. Well, hopefully... I mean, C's get degrees, right?
6. Repeat
See steps one through five. Yes...again. It's going to happen, but it happens to everyone. We're all just kind of winging it. But what's college without some kind of mental breakdown?
