London, England is a place like no other. It is a place of afternoon tea, art museums, The Beatles, Harry Potter, and much, much more. They may speak our language, but London's way of life is unique and entirely it's own. And after studying abroad there, you may find yourself bringing a few London-isms back to the U.S.A.
1. You naturally walk at a pace about 2 & ½ times faster than everyone else around you.
London is one of the most populated cities in the world, so it makes sense that its inhabitants move a little quicker than the average Joe to weave in and out of the crowds. You feel inclined to keep up with them, which might explain to your friends why you move as if you’re late for a highly important appointment – at all times.
2. You can’t sit in a classroom for more than 45 minutes.
Professors take advantage of the fact that London is home to many museums, art galleries, media hubs, businesses, café’s (yes, we went there for class) etc, in the best way possible. They often will only “lecture” (if we can even call it that) for around a quarter of an hour before taking the group out for some experiential learning. This is a smart move on their part, because this type of hands-on learning makes the material stick in a person’s mind as more than just a memory.
3. You can read a public transportation map like it’s a kindergartener’s picture book.
Public transportation is key to living like a local Londoner, and students that have studied there will have it mastered. Whether it’s by tube, subway, or even double-decker bus, London’s students can find the routes they need anywhere in the world.
4. You’re almost a pro at walking in heels.
Notice that I said almost – the cobblestone sidewalks can be a little unforgiving. But London is one of the few fashion capitals of the world, and people really step it up in the footwear department. Whether you gained your skills on nights out with your friends, walking to an internship, or just some trips to Tesco, you’ll never fear wearing heels again.
5. But you’re an actual pro at getting an entire meal out of free samples.
Markets make it easy. Borough, Camden, and Brick Lane taught you to be frugal with your food. Why pay if its offered in several places for free?
6. Every once in a while, you walk on the left.
Old habits are hard to break. Just apologize to everyone you run into, you can’t help that your heart is somewhere else <3
Cheers!
