At some point in their college career, almost every student asks themselves, “Is this college for me?” or, “What am I doing here?” College is a BIG investment and student loans are the devil, so it’s very important that you invest your time and money at the right school.
Here’s 5 reasons you may wanna reconsider the university you’re currently attending:
1. You’re unhappy
Your personal happiness and mental health should ALWAYS be your top priority, no exceptions! Frequently, many students place their happiness and mental health on the back burner while they shuffle through the vigorous coursework in their classes; which isn’t healthy whatsoever. If the university you’re at right doesn’t improve your happiness, no matter what you do, maybe it’s time to start looking at other universities.
2. The curriculum of your major sucks
The curriculum of degree programs obviously differ from university to university and sometimes are even better. The curriculum at your school may either lack creative and thought-provoking courses, or isn’t challenging enough for you. A degree program at another university may be a better suit for you and your education if you have this issue.
3. It’s too dang expensive
College is extremely expensive nowadays, especially for my private university folks. The last thing you need is the burden of thousands upon thousands of dollars in student loans, while you navigate through your career. Student loans, whether private or federal, can create a drastic burden on you, and if you receive student loans with a cosigner, that burden is placed on your parent and/or guardian. As the years pass by and tuition and fees increase, so does loan repayment costs and interest rates. However, if you have tried everything and come to conclusion that financial instability is something you cannot afford, it’s time to find a more affordable institution in which you can still excel and achieve your academic goals and aspirations.
4. You’re homesick like crazy
If you find yourself constantly FaceTiming and Skyping your family and friends back home, or taking the Greyhound or flight to your hometown, chances are you’re homesick. Next trip you take back, you and your parent or guardian should start considering what the college(s) in your hometown have to offer.
5. You don’t fit in with culture or vibe of your current school
There’s a plethora of things that contribute to the culture and vibe of an institution from the faculty and staff, residence halls, advisors, reputation, etc. Maybe you just don’t mesh with the student body. Maybe you clash heads with a lot of the faculty members often. Maybe you’re a reserved introvert and you currently attend a large party school. Whatever the case may be, find a school that you can prosper in without going too far out of your comfort zone.
At all times, make sure you’re attending and investing your time and money into a university that accommodates any need and want you may ever possess.
