The long lost art of writing letters is all but lost in todays electric society. Writing letters is nearly exclusively reserved for holidays, gifts, and deaths. However, writing letters hasn't been lost to us, yet! Many people still write letters to their pen pals today. If you aren't, let me tell you why you need to get on this culturally brilliant phenomenon!
1. New Hobby.
Writing letters on paper only require paper, stamps, and your choice of pen or pencil. If you live in the U.S, a book of forever stamps are just under $30, and you can write like 15 or 20 letters with even the basic book of stamps. That could be a whole years worth of traded letters!
2. Practice A New Language.
If you're learning a language, find a pen pal matching group, and meet up with someone who speaks that language as well! Then, you will be learning new words and solidifying that knowledge when writing back. Soon you'll be a masterful writer in your language of choice.
3. Stationary. Stationary. Did I Mention Stationary?
If you've ever seen some fancy beautiful paper, writing in gorgeous handwriting with a gold pen, you're cheating yourself. Writing a pen pal is your excuse to buy those fancy pens you've always wanted. Hey now! There's no shame in it. The easiest way to make writing your penpal a special and exciting experience (more than already!) is to invest in some quality stationary. Stationary also makes writing less of a chore and more of a treat.
4. Improve Your Handwriting.
Okay, let's be honest here. Ever since they stopped teaching handwriting in schools, the average person's writing legibility has dropped drastically. If you're bothered by this, writing a pen pal can be a source of practice for you!
5. Spelling.
Ever asked yourself "Where would I be without spell check?" I have. I have a penpal. Now, I know I'd be just fine. Also, a great opportunity is to insert that word of the day from your calendar.
6. Meet New People!
Writing a pen pal allows you to talk to someone from a different culture whom you would have never met otherwise. You can make a new friend, or be exposed to a different culture and learn a little something every time you get a letter.
