6 Reasons to Watch Stranger Things

There’s a new show on Netflix that has been getting a lot of attention lately, and deservedly so. This show is called Stranger Things. The plot was relatively unknown before it was released, as the little bits of trailers did not give much of the story away, leaving mystery and intrigue behind for the audience. And, after the pilot season was finally released, the Internet boomed with applause towards Stranger Things, a show that combines sci-fi, horror, and mystery into something new and complex that hasn’t really been seen before.

However, there are probably some people that have not had the pleasure of watching this fantastic show. So, here are 6 reasons as to why everyone should go straight to their laptops and immerse themselves into the world of Stranger Things.

1. The central cast

Usually, child characters are not always the most appealing to see, mainly because they are usually portrayed as being obnoxious and just plain annoying. However, the cast of Stranger Things is not the case. As the show surrounds itself around five middle-school-aged children, having so many characters could make or break the show. But, Stranger Things was able to portray these characters in a way that makes them more intriguing and more interesting than how child characters seem to always be portrayed. It’s great to see these characters as those that are easy to love rather than a tire to watch.

2. The seamless plot

With the show’s initial release, the producers and creators decided not to release too much information about the plot, so little will be said about it here. But, what can be said is that Stranger Things is everything a television show should be. It has horror, but still combines itself with sci-fi and mystery in order to create an amazing piece of television. And yet, it still has time for a little romance and humor along with it. Although it may seem that this could make a plot very convoluted, Stranger Things still manages to make room for each and every character, creating complex relationships, horrifying situations, and heartbreaking reveals.

3. It's incredibly addicting

Stranger Things is full of many twists and turns, cliffhangers, and surprising revelations, which makes it so hard to stop watching once the show gets going. As each episode rolls on, it makes the audience yearn for the next episode so that they can find out more about each character’s fate and how the season will end.

4. The Spielberg and Stephen King Easter eggs

It’s so easy to see how much the creators love 80s pop culture as soon as Stranger Things starts. There is always a danger in doing this action because it could overshadow the show’s core and integral story. However, the writers were still able to create a world and a story that is both extremely creative and innovative while also alluding to their love and joy to their childhood. Seeing the many hints toward an amazing filmmaker and author makes Stranger Things personal and unique, and creates a sense of nostalgia to the audience, showing the passion that the creators had toward this show.

5. Eleven

There shouldn’t be too much said about Eleven, as it’s so easy to spoil something if she’s talked about. However, what should be said is that she is a character that can take the audience by surprise with her little dialogue, as she is also able to make the audience completely fall in love with her character. She is seen to be one of the central characters of Stranger Things, yet she does not completely steal the spotlight, and, instead, helps the plot become more complex and the world become even more sinister.

6. Netflix just renewed Stranger Things for season 2

At this point, it's almost no surprise that Netflix was able to create yet another fantastic binge-worthy show. And, as soon as they saw how big of a phenomenon Stranger Things proved to be, Netflix revealed that they have renewed the show for a next season. Having this much of an impact as the show did, there should be plenty more exciting things to come in the next season that will premiere in 2017.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
