To all of the brave people who took the big leap and headed to a different state for college, you may have made one of the best decisions possible. As we all know, this wasn't an easy decision, and it will come with some rough patches. But in the end, you know of all the great things that will come with this decision. This decision is a step towards independence and newfound experiences. College is the time to go out and try something new in order to find yourself, and what better way to do it than somewhere geographically foreign to you? Here are six reasons why going out of state for college is a good choice.

1. A fresh start.

Moving hundreds of miles away from all the people who know you can be the new beginning that you were looking for. You're now in a place where it's likely that no one knows you or your past. This is a perfect opportunity to start over and not let anything hold you back.

2. Experience a new place.

You get the opportunity to move to a new place and explore a new area of the country and all of the wonderful things that the area has to offer.

3. Become more independent.

College will be the start of your adult life, and moving out of state forces you to take responsibility for yourself. Mom and Dad won't be around to do your laundry, and home won't be a short drive away if you need a mental break on the weekend. Suddenly, you become responsible for your own things. You develop a sense of happiness and independence from being able to take care of yourself.

4. Learn how to deal with any situation.

You were able to move miles away from where you grew up, and away from close family and friends at a young age. You've now mastered the power of being able to handle any new situation that life can throw at you.

5. Push out of your comfort zone.

If the change to college wasn't enough, now you're in a completely unfamiliar area. You learn to embrace all the things that made you scared. Not knowing the area or the people can push you to discover new places and develop new friendships.

6. Appreciation for family and friends back home.

Even though you wanted to go far, and it was the best decision you could have made, you occasionally find yourself sad and missing those important people back home. You really get to look back and appreciate all of the great people you have in your life. You learn that they'll always be there for you with smiles and open arms when you come back after not seeing them for five months. You know that it's OK, because you always just pick up right where you left off.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
