Everyone who writes for the Odyssey forges a bond with his or her Editor-In-Chief. It’s impossible not to. You speak to them multiple times a week and sometimes you see them around campus just as frequently. It’s a given that you hold the highest respect for them as well – between their full-time job, internship and school they somehow still find time to read through and edit your communities articles and also maintain their 3.0 GPA or higher. Here are a few things I would like my EIC to know before she leaves us and faces the real world.
1. Thank you for always being supportive
I know, technically it’s your job to support us but you never judge and you always tell us to go for what we want, especially with writing. You remind us constantly that at Odyssey, you are writing for yourself and if someone doesn’t agree with your opinion that’s all right.
2. Thank you for always giving us ideas
The hardest thing is when it’s the day before an article is due and you still have no idea what to write on. When you send us that list of popular topics in the week, I am literally so grateful. Even if I don’t write about something that is on that list it always helps me narrow down my choices in the end.
3. Thank you for listening
School is very stressful and when you throw in a social life, family and work, it can become too much. All of us writers at Odyssey know that we can always go to their EIC to just talk. The EIC is like the parent of your Odyssey community and they listen every time you need to talk.
4. Thank you for the reminders
Like I said before, school and life in general is very stressful and sometimes you forget what day of the week it is. If it wasn’t for my EIC I would miss half of my classes because I didn’t know what day it was without her reminding everyone in the group chat.
5. Thank you for making me feel popular
There is nothing like being a part of a great and big Odyssey community. There is constantly someone to talk to about current events or trends because the writers like to discuss their articles and the articles of other people. Sometimes your phone buzzes off the hook in class and when you look it just turns out to be a pet spam that the EIC started because she wanted to see everyone’s fur babies.
6. Thank you for being my EIC
I would really like to thank my EIC for just being the EIC. I couldn’t have chosen a better community to be a part of if I tried. From that first phone call on my way home when you interviewed me to now when I have to say goodbye. You have been amazing and you are going to kill it in the real world.
Not everyone will have an EIC as great as mine but I hope at least you have a good relationship with yours because you will remember her for a very very long time when she has to leave and become an adult.
