Seattle is known for its endless winter rain, and University of Washington students, in particular, are stereotyped as always being bundled up in coats or huddled indoors to study and escape the weather.
However, spring at UW brings an entirely different perspective to campus: the weather is lovely, the campus is stunning, and students emerge from their rooms with a love for spring that can’t be matched anywhere else.
Here are six reasons why a UW spring is better than spring on any other campus.
1. Everyone appreciates the sunny days
After our particularly dark and dreary winter quarters, the first few days of sun are received joyously from UW students as they try to combat their vitamin D deficiency. Everyone seems to pour outside to lay in the sun, making UW look like a scene from a college movie. You’ll probably even catch someone in a swimsuit trying to get a tan on the first sunny day of spring.
2. The cherry blossoms
Although students gripe about the crowds that the cherry blossom trees in the quad bring, there’s no denying that they are beautiful and make UW look scenic and cheerful. People travel from all over to see the pink flowers blooming at the end of March.
3. There are dogs everywhere you go
You can’t go outside during the spring without seeing a dog around campus that pulls on its leash to see you. There is also an outrageous number of huskies walking around campus, mirroring both our school spirit and our obsession with large, fluffy dogs.
4. Kayaking! Canoeing! Swimming!
UW, as we know, is built right on the edge of Lake Washington. As soon as it gets warm out, all sorts of activities become available just a short walk from campus.
5. You can wear those shorts again
Remember the cute summer clothes you shoved into the back of your closet in late September? The ones you haven’t touched in months because all you wore were jeans, boots, and a raincoat? They can see the light of day again!
6. We get new classes in the spring
Unlike schools on the semester system, we get to leave for spring break after finals and start a new set of classes on the first day of spring quarter. This means that students don’t have to spend spring break worrying about studying, and if they didn’t like their winter quarter classes, they get a fresh start with the new quarter.
