Going to the city that never sleeps during the week you'll never sleep.

Classes are ending soon and within weeks we will all be free to binge watch Netflix. Until then, it’s the dreaded “Reading Period.” We all know that reading period is a time we should be pulling all-nighters three nights in a row, drugged up with caffeine and left over steam but there’s always a part of us that just wants to leave. We want to leave campus for a bit and just let loose. What is a better way to let go of finals than to travel to the greatest city ever? Here are six reasons to go to New York City during reading period. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

1. $0.99 Pizza Slices

You heard me right. In the great city of thin crusted pizza over-saturated with fatty cheese with enough oil to make your paper plate useless, pizza slices are only a dollar. With your college student budget and final week stress, this is definitely the place you need to be for your cravings.

2. The "street" performers

From the mariachi on the 7 train to the dancers on the N, you don’t need to pay for entertainment here. If it’s Friday and you’re feeling down because your final is in two days, head to Union Square and you can make GIGANTIC bubbles with other adults. If it’s not then you can just head down to Washington Square Park and watch the skaters ollie their way through the crowd. If you’re observant, you might even find another college student avoiding their responsibilities while you’re there.

3. Bagels, Bagels, and BAGELS!

By now you’ve been surviving breakfast (if you still even go to breakfast) with stale dining hall bagels with weirdly chunky cream cheese. No fear my dear, New York bagels will save your palate. Nothing compares to the taste of a good cream cheese and lox bagel that just lifts a semester’s worth of dining hall trauma out of your system. Bonus: You can stock up and bring some back to campus.

4. The specialty coffee shops

So this one is a secret shame of mine, but let’s just go with it. Why should you sit in a stiff wooden chair in a crowded library drinking bad coffee when you could be drinking an Americano with quiet jazz music in the background? Going to New York doesn’t have to be an extravagant ordeal, it could just be a change in scenery. If you’re going to fill up on caffeine to survive, it might as well be a damn good cup.

5. Snapchat geofilters

From Brooklyn Bridge to Harlem, New York is filled with hundreds of different geofilters you can use to make your roommate jealous. She’ll check her phone every time you send a selfie and be jealous of your adventures

6. It's cheaper than you think.

With sites like Airbnb and megabus, going away for a weekend has never been cheaper! Say goodbye to spending hundreds of dollars trying to find a hotel room on your student budget and say hello to basically free lodging. Do yourself a favor and leave campus for a few days. If money can buy you happiness during Reading Period, a trip to New York is what it is for. You can study on the bus to and from the city, but you can’t relax and unwind in a dimly lit library. Take a break, you deserve it!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
