One of the latest hobbies amongst adults of all ages is coloring. A pastime that was once seen as just for kids is now for everyone! There are coloring books meant specifically for adults; the pages are filled with intricate patterns, shapes, and scenery. I have recently become obsessed with coloring after finding the section in Barnes and Noble. Take a break from adulting and worry about coloring in the lines instead. Here are six reasons why you should start coloring.
1. It is extremely relaxing.
Coloring will put you in a better mood. One of my favorite coloring books that I have is even called “Art Therapy.” It is very meditative, so after you color, your mind feels sharp and rejuvenated. Having trouble focusing on something important? Take breaks every so often and color for a few minutes. You will work better and your mind will thank you.
2. It brings out your inner child.
Coloring is a basic instinct for children. They color regularly for their entire childhood. When was the last time you colored for fun? There’s a good chance that it was when you were a kid. You can even color in children’s coloring books if you want. Your favorite cartoons and princesses probably have coloring books.
3. It brings out your inner artist.
Ever dream of being the next Van Gogh? (Besides chopping your ear off.) Coloring gives you an opportunity to be artistic. You don’t need lessons or talent for this type of art. You get to choose the colors and patterns you want to work with. You get to determine how you want your page to look. Make it however you want it to look.
4. It is inexpensive.
Coloring books and utensils can be found relatively cheap. My favorite coloring book that I have was only 7 dollars from Barnes and Noble. Crayons, colored pencils, and markers can also be purchased for a few dollars. You can even print out coloring book pages from Google Images. Just search ‘adult coloring pages’ or even something more specific.
5. It can be a social activity, too.
You don’t have to only color in solitude. Grab a few coloring books, pencils, some snacks and throw a party! My friends and I called it BYOCB (Bring Your Own Coloring Book). Sip on a glass of wine while coloring and chatting with your friends. Have a contest to see who can create the best piece of art, or work on a page together! It is so much fun. I promise.
6. It is portable art.
You can take coloring books anywhere with you. Color on the bus, the plane, in waiting rooms, or in the park. They even make purse-sized ones that come with mini colored pencils. You never know when you are going to want to color a quick picture. Once you start coloring, you will want to do it during all of your free time!
