6 Realistic New Year's Resolutions

Because I'm probably not going to the gym every day.

If you're like me, New Year's resolutions aren't exactly your thing. Or maybe you've given resolutions a shot, but can't seem to find yourself motivated to keep up with a costly gym membership or preparing meals at the beginning of each week.

However, that doesn't mean you can't work towards being a better version of yourself. There are so many other ways to ring in the new year with a positive attitude. Here are six realistic resolutions for you to consider, especially if you want to improve your life while staying away from the New Year's clichés.

1. Listen to new music

This one is fun and not necessarily life-altering. (In my opinion, this is one of the best types of resolutions to have because it's not too intimidating). In 2016, I discovered a lot of new music with the help of my friends. It's made me happier, plus it's fun to discover new music in my down time.

2. Drink more water

This one is so simple yet so important for your overall wellbeing. Recently, I've been keeping better track of how much water I drink each day. I know that bringing this habit into the new year will help me greatly. Drinking lots of water helps you feel great, and it doesn't take much effort to make sure you're staying hydrated; just carry around a refillable bottle!

3. Take more walks outside

So you're "too busy" for the gym (or maybe you just don't like going to the gym). There are many other ways to stay fit, and walking is one of those ways. It's not one of the more strenuous activities, but it does keep your blood flowing if you're walking at a decent pace and walking in different terrains. Even if you don't want to walk for the exercise aspect, you can always take casual strolls outside just to clear your head from a hectic day.

4. Call your relatives more often

I know that I talk to my parents every week, but sometimes, I forget to talk to some of my other relatives. Being around them this holiday season reminded me how much I miss them when I'm away at school. Even if it's only once every few weeks, try to call your relatives when you can. It's important to maintain the relationships that matter most.

5. Find new ways to destress

When you have a free moment, try looking into a new hobby or activity. People destress in different ways, and it's important to find something that relaxes you. I like to keep a journal around to write down any random or stressful thoughts I have. Who knows, maybe you'll learn that you like to knit or take care of plants. Try giving a new activity a shot to see if it's something that calms you.

6. Start making lists of your anxieties/worries

As a college student, I have a lot of things on my mind at most hours of the day. From school to work to socialization, things can get pretty hectic. Sometimes, it helps to keep track of what's bothering me or causing me to freak out. It also helps me keep tabs on how I'm doing and what I can change to improve my mental health.

As we enter 2017, I hope you find that the world is kind to you. I wish you nothing but health and happiness.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
