6 Rap Songs You Didn't Know Sampled Video Game Music

Despite all of their flashy clothes and braggadocios music, rappers are people too. And they like to play video games just like the rest of us. Both rap and video games rose to prominence in the 1970s, and neither show any sign of slowing down. Sometimes their love for video games crosses over into their music!

Kanye West- "Facts" and "Pt. 2"

If you haven't listened to Kanye's new album "The Life of Pablo" yet, do yourself a favor: crawl out from whatever rock you've been hiding under and download it right away. Apparently, Yeezy is a big Street Fighter fan, because both of these songs sample the 1991 classic Street Fighter 2. In both songs, the announcer from SF2 can be heard yelling "PERFECT!" which is what he says in game when a player wins a round without taking any damage. In "Facts," you can also hear Guile screaming "Sonic boom!" as well as Dhalsim screaming "Yoga fire!" For your added viewing pleasure, here's Lupe Fiasco beating Street Fighter legend Daigo at Street Fighter V.

Childish Gambino- "Eat Your Vegetables"

Childish Gambino is definitely known as one of the nerdier rappers. He frequently raps about old cartoons, video games and comics. In "Eat Your Vegetables," Gambino samples David Wise's legendary soundtrack to 1994's "Donkey Kong Country." Specifically, he samples "Aquatic Ambiance," the song that plays during the infamously difficult underwater levels. He's not the only rapper who's sampled "Donkey Kong Country" either.

Drake- "6 God" and "Hotline Bling"

Like Gambino, our boy Drizzy sampled "Donkey Kong Country." This time, Drake sampled "Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest," which is one of yours truly's favorite games of all time. The song he samples is called "Haunted Chase," which is one of the most stressful video game levels I've ever played in my life. Those mine cart levels give me the video game equivalent of PTSD. In addition, Drake's megahit "Hotline Bling" not only features the greatest music video of all time, but samples Star Road from Super Mario World. Being the first video game I ever played, Super Mario World holds a very special place in my heart. Apparently it has a place in Drake's too!

Wiz Khalifa- "Never Been"

Wiz Khalifa is known for his mellow demeanor and his dank lyrics. In "Never Been," Wiz samples the Super Nintendo time-hopping JRPG adventure, Chrono Trigger. The song from the game is called "Schala's Theme," and sounds like the soundtrack to an atmospheric snowscape. I don't know the actual context, because unfortunately I've never played Chrono Trigger. However, it's frequently recognized as one of the greatest RPG's of all time, so I'll get around to it someday.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
