6 Perks of Going to A Small College

It's Really a Great Decision

6 Perks of Going to A Small College

My college is small. Actually about the same size of my high school. We joke that you can't do anything without the whole campus, and even your professors, knowing about it. But all jokes aside, going to a small college was one of the greatest decisions I've made. The intimacy of knowing all of your classmates is comforting and the rewards are amazing!

1. The smiling faces

Instead of constantly getting resting b*tch face while walking to class, going to a small school means being greeted with smiles just walking across campus. Since everyone basically knows everyone, there's no reason not to smile!

2. You'll never be alone in class

Or eating. Or the library, Or anywhere really. And while at times you might think it's weird that no matter where you're walking, you're probably with a friend, knowing people wherever you go is really a blessing. The chances of you walking into a classroom on the first day of the semester where you know no one are slim. It's a refreshing feeling to see friendly and familiar faces during new situations, and going to a small school gives you that community.

3. You will probably be friends with your professors

No joke. People told me before attending my college that you would become close to your professors because the class sizes were so small. But I never expected to eat dinner at my professor's house with the 9 other people in that class. Not only will a small school let you really get to know your professors, but it also makes it much easier to ask questions and get help when you need it.

4. No. Parking. Garages.

This is a perk that I am very passionate about. This past year, I and a friend went to visit someone at a nearby larger university. We had to park in a big garage maybe a mile away. And sometimes they have to walk miles or even take a bus just to get to class. At a small school, feel free to wake up 10 minutes before class starts because it takes hardly any time to walk across campus!

5. The opportunities are endless

Because you're able to get to know the faculty at a small school so well, it's not uncommon to find out about jobs, internships, or volunteer opportunities through your professors. I've gone on trips for a class, learned about mission trip opportunities, and even internships. At a small college, the professors tend to care more about individual students and offer endless opportunities.

6. A tight-knit, supporting community

At my small college, I have friends who easily become family. You all understand what it's like going to a small school, and get to see and live with each other every day! While going to a small school can be different at times, always having a community to talk to and experience things with makes it the best.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
