Being a native to a college town is sometimes really cool. When the bars aren't overrun with students and downtown isn't jam-packed on a Friday night, the city screams adventure and there's always something to do. I've lived in Athens, GA my entire life and every time I come home from school, I fall more in love with my city. If you're creative enough, there's always something to do or someplace to have fun. Bright lights and a beautiful city, this article is for non-natives in order to get to know my Athens better.
1. Pulaski Tracks
A gem for all artists. Underneath the tracks on Pulaski Street, this wall is where everyone leaves their mark. It's definitely more graffiti there now. So whether you feel like expressing yourself through spray paint or simply using the wall as a back drop for your dope shots, the tracks are a perfect chill spot.
2. Bear Hollow Zoo
Our very own little zoo, Bear Hollow is the perfect date night spot. They have a wide variety of animals and beautiful scenery. Located in Memorial Park, it has plenty of walking paths and shade trees. Remember to bring bread to feed the ducks!
3. Watson Mill
One of my personal favorite places. A cute waterfall area where you can spend all day climbing through the water and soaking in the sun. The drive is a little outside the Athens area, but it's completely worth it. Grab some friends, sunscreen and a box of sandwiches and go on a (not so) beach day.
4. Botanical Gardens
Not really a place specific to the city since every city has one, but its amazing scenery is the perfect place to host events, take graduation pictures or grab a blanket and read a book.
5. North Campus
Not really a secret because most students already know about it. This extravagant area is called the Founder's Garden. Located in downtown, straight past the arches, the garden is the perfect spot for relaxation.
6. The Tree Top Room
A not so known area, the tree room is located in what used to be an abandoned warehouse but is now used for special events. A fire burned the roof off and it's literally a roofless building with tress growing through the middle. At night, it's one of the best views ever seen. This slice of heaven is great to rent for dinner dates.
This is just a small peek into a city full of love and adventure. Even though I'm a Georgia Southern Eagle, I'll always be a Dawg at heart. Athens, I love you.
