Summer in Oklahoma is blazing heat and next to nonexistent wind. Somedays you can get a sunburn just walking to the mailbox and can feel dehydration setting in on the way from your front door to your car. With all of the still heat no one wants to spend their day standing in lines at an amusement park or in a packed crowd at Bonnaroo. Luckily, Oklahoma has quite a few nuggets of good fun that won't melt you down or give you third degree burns.
1. Floating Films
The boathouse district in Oklahoma City offers films on the river some Fridays during the summer and early fall. Grab a blanket and a picnic basket and enjoy the movie from land or choose to view from a raft or tube for $10.
2. Turner Falls
This Oklahoma gem is tucked away in Southern Oklahoma near Davis. Bring a lunch for a day full of fun with friends and stop by Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies on your way home for the most delicious pocket of goodness you have ever had.
3. Sulphur Springs
Sulphur Springs offers hiking trails and cool springs to swim in. The natural creek has short waterfalls that block off pools all throughout the creek to jump into. On cooler days you might even want to take a few trails and check out some of the natural springs farther off.
4. Stratford Peach Festival
There isn't much better than a sweet peach in the heat of summer, and no one does peaches better that Stratford, Oklahoma. Head on down to Stratford City Park July 16 for a day full of fun and peachy sweetness.
5. Bleu Garten
Bleu Garten is tucked into the heart of Midtown Oklahoma City. Known as "Oklahoma's Original Food Truck Park", Bleu Garten is often the scene for night life in the city spring through fall.
6. Fourth of July
'MERICA amiright? Independence Day is one of the two bests days for Oklahomans and we always do it right. Even if you can't join 90 percent of Oklahomans and 3.4 million of your closest friends at the lake, there are still so many festivals and firework shows offered all across the state. Check out Travel OK for events near you.
